Readers: iSight problems, solutions
updated 03:55 pm EDT, Thu July 31, 2003
MacNN reader Cedric Pinsonnault says that Apple's iSight may not necessarily work well with wireless networks: "An Apple tech told me that Apple has noted a problem with iSight camera used on AirPort or third-party wireless networks afecting the number of 'packets' being transmitted to the point of making video chat imposible. I am experiencing this problem, and the only cure is to connect directly to the Internet--without Airport." [Limiting iChat's bandwidth usage may help relieve the problem.] Meanwhile, another reader was able to the use a noted yesterday.

To be expected...

If anyone has even the most basic understanding of wireless technology and networking it should come as no suprise that iSight may not work well over wireless.

works fine for me

Well, my Powerbook G4 12, iSight and my Airport extreme network, all connected to my 512/256 ADSL line, works fine.
I'm in the UK, and have video chats with local clients and clients in the US with no problems at all.

Problem where?

This doesn't sound like an iSight problem so much as an iChat AV Beta problem.

using DV camera

Any hints on using a DV camera? I don't want to have it in record mode. The camera on preview mode (ie, before you push record) works fine but the camera turns itself off as a battery saving meausre if you don't push record within about 3-5 minutes. Which kind of sucks for iChatAv use. This is a Sony TRV9

I read that if you take the tape out of the camera it will not go into the battery saving sleep mode. I have the SONY TRV22 and this worked great for me. I also use it over an aiport (b) connection/cable modem and have had great results. The only problems I have seen is that the reciever might have to mute the volume once in a while to get things working in sync but this has nothing to do with the camera.

got broadband?
07/31, 08:41pm reply
I met all of the requirements for iSight (or thought I did); PowerBook G4 (1GHz 17") and cable modem with Airport Extreme. Tried and tried to get it to work video chatting but always froze the iChat AV video window on connecting (other users video window froze too). After much failed troubleshooting and a couple calls to Apple Support (basically dodged the issue by crying "beta software") I began to wonder if my cable modem was fast enough uploading. I checked my cable specs on the basic package and found my while my download was a respectable 386kbps, my upload was only 64kbps! I thought I had broadband, but in fact my upload rate was only marginally better than dial-up. A call to have my service upgraded to 1000/128 (another $10/mo.) solved my problem. It would be helpful if Apple were to define "broadband" and give the minimun bandwidth requirements. After much coaxing, I was able to get the Apple Support guy to say that a minimum of 100kbps upload was needed. If this was stated clearly instead of "broadband internet connection" I could have save much time and grief.

no problems here either

i've been using my pb12" w/ APextreme and a graphite base station to iChat with my parents who are using a plain vanilla airport card in a quicksilver with a linksys router. we leave the connection up for days at a time without packet loss. usually only break connection to take the powerbook to work.
a little more info on the nature of the problem may be warranted.
