Apple has confirmed that will begin a (earlier this week): "As part of a pilot program, a few Best Buy stores will begin carrying a larger selection of Apple products, and Apple sales representatives will work in some Best Buy retail locations to help enhance the customer buying experience. The program starts the week of August 10 and we will review its progress in the weeks ahead." The new program marks a return of Macs to Best Buy shelves, where Macs were available until early 1998.

    pilot

I'm glad to see it's only a pilot program for now. It'll let evaluate their investment and hopefully make the return of Mac's to BestBuy stores positive.

    What about iMacs?

Didn't they sell iMacs in lat e98 and early 99 (until they balked on the fruit flavors)?

    yeah

there were inventory issues. I believe the rumor was that Apple wanted them to carry all five colors, but BestBuy only wanted to sell the best selling colors.... oy vey!

And that, my friends, is why everything is now white! :-)

    Naah...

I seriously doubt that the fact that Best Buy didn't want to carry all 5 colors is the sole reason that there's only one color now. Best Buy ain't that much of an influence.

    Best Mistake Buy...

10 steps forward, one step back.....

In short, this is a fresh blunder. Best Buy will only use this just like everyone else did ( Sears..Circuit City ) which is show the iMac, then show what you can get with half the money on a PC. The sales people will use the Mac as a instrument to sell PCs like they did before. Go watch like I did at the store and see for yourself...

    colors were lame

The fruitcake color scheme was pretty bad, thank god Apple has settled on silver and white. It was as if the imacs were shouting "Look at me! I'm g**!" Now the new machines look like they mean business. I love it.

    You are right

Sales people will use this as an opportunity to sell cheaper pc's and HIGHER MARGIN items that go along with them.

    - Software
    - Printers
    - Scanners
    - Speakers

This is a brilliant move by BEST BUY.

If they sell Macs in the process, they open their base of customers. If they use the Macs to sell more collateral ticket items in relation to pc's then they also win.

Apple is always going to be the b****** child of the computing world.

    I'd rather be a b****** child than the s***-w****-peecee of s***.

    Rage against the MACHINE!
    Rage!
    Rage!
at the dying of the light!
I shall not go quietly into
    the good night!

errr, something like that, drama, drama, drama.
    Apple is the best.
    Yadda-Yadda.

God, I hate pc's and those that use them.
PC's don't make the world a drab place
    People who use them do.

If anyone uses that as a slogan and gets some money,
I had better get a few for the trouble.

    Correction.

"It was as if the imacs were shouting "Look at me! I'm g**!" Now the new machines look like they mean business. I love it."

I belong to the creative department. I the like color scheme and Im not g** (although there's nothing wrong with being g** either.) Remember that color scheme then provided an innovation in style rather than the perennial beige motiff. It means business for us creatives. Its just that like any trends, it has lost its luster thru the years and its no longer a viable for business.

    iMac Swing Arm?

So does that mean the chrome swing arm is an over-compensation for childhood feelings of inadequacy?

Personally, I think it was the beginning of a well needed revolution. It was the very beginnings of having a computer that you wanted to be part of your life. Material things that you spend significant time with should be artistic, and uplifting. The off white box needed to go.

    re: Correction

Actually, if you ever walked into an office of a business and saw a dozen fruity colored imacs on all the desks, it looked very q****, not in a bad way, but it definitely projected a certain gayness to a company's image. Not every company can tolerate an image like that. A construction company in Hollywood could but one in Atascadero could not. The fruity colors limited the market segment to the few open minded individuals who don't care, but none of the conservative customers wanted them.
