Microsoft Office v.X to get Exchange support

updated 02:20 pm EDT, Mon July 28, 2003

Microsoft is expected to release for Mac OS X later this summer with Exchange support for OS X users in corporate environments, according to Microsoft Watch. "The update, Version 10.1.4 of Office X, will add Exchange client functions to Office's e-mail and PIM component, Entourage. It will also incorporate bug fixes to Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Microsoft provided the update to beta testers in July.... Users will be able to synchronize Entourage contacts and calendar events with Exchange servers, choosing to synch all of their items or only items in a specific category."

    Don't forget...

..and don;t forget that you have to be running Exchange 2000 for your nice new OSX-compliant exchange client to work. Oh, and don't forget that you have to upgrade to Active Directory before you can upgrade your server(s) to Exchange 2000. Thanks, Microsoft. :P

    Right but...

...I'd much rather have the Windows servers running AD than any older MS directories. This Exchange for Entourage is either the best worst news ever or the worst best news. I can't decide. But it's one less reason they can take my Mac away at work.

    This brings

OS X to the (Windows Server) enterprise network. I know alot of people that want to use their PowerBooks to connect to Exchange 2000. I for one know many laid back sysadmins that would not mind people bringing in their Macs and using them in the office (as long as they don't have to support them).

    Re: Outlook for OS X?

There will never be an Outlook for OS X. Adding Exchange connectivity to Entourage is the way to go.

And if you don't feel like ponying up for Entourage, wait a while. There are rumors that the version of iCal in Panther will be able to talk to the calendaring component in Exchange, and if that's true then Mail.app will probably gain Exchange connectivity as well.

Apple is slowly but surely chipping away at their reliance on Microsoft, and that's a good thing.

    Exchange Messaging suppor

Wonder if soon after an update to MSN will come out that allows communication with othe Exchange clients. Would be nice to be able to chat with PC users on the internal network.

    What no ISync Support?

I thought I read somewhere that there would be ISync support for Entourage with the next revision. I like it more than the Mail.app but I love ISync for my phone and Pod contacts.

    ???
