Can any MP3 player beat the iPod?

With its compact size, slick design and big storage capacity, the San Francisco Chronicle asks, "" The review looks at the Creative Nomad Jukebox 3, E-Digital Odyssey 1000, Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen, and IRiver iFP-195T. Though bulkier than the iPod, these devices do provide the same performance and storage capacity, but don't cost as much. They also lack the seamless syncing and simple operation provided by the iPod.

    AAC vs WMA will tell...

If Apple doesn't launch the iTMS store for Windows soon, WMA file format will be the next de-facto format for online music. In that case, Apple would have to make the iPod WMA compatible.

Soon, nobody will want a portable player that can't play WMA files, even if AAC sounds better.

    WMA

No, most people WON'T want a WMA player, because most music listeners aren't going to waste their money on downloaded music in a format that will only play on their computer (one which they'll have to keep forever to keep their rights management licenses) and whatever device MS and the seller says they can play it on.

    Good analogy, really

This review tells me nothing I didn't already know:

If you're a cheap b****** and don't mind sacrificing ease of use, reliability and elegance -- quality, in a nutshell -- to get some level of basic service, you'll buy a non-Apple product.

When you acquire some class and disposable income, you go for the best -- and that's Apple.

Japan's iRiver has launched the latest iPod clone, the iHP-100, a 10GB hard drive-based MP3 player.

While the iHP-100 certainly lacks the iPod's styling, it does have some neat touches of its own. Like the latest iPods (but not the 10GB version, it has to be said), the iRiver device ships with a remote control unit, but the iHP-100's version has a full-size backlit track information display screen. The iHP-100 also offers digital optical audio input and output ports, and you can hook up any source to digitise sound directly to the player's hard drive. There's a built-in microphone too. The iRiver also contains an FM stereo radio receiver.

In size, the iHP-100 is a little taller but the same width and fractionally thinner than the 10GB iPod. Both weigh around 160g - rather less than Creative's 20GB Nomad Zen, which comes in at 268g. Like the Apple machine, the iHP-100 offers a large, 160 x 128 backlit information display screen and a five-way navigation control, again better than the Zen's tiny 132x64 window. There's a built-in six-band equaliser; the iPods has a 20-band version.

The iHP-100 connects to a host PC via a USB 2.0 Hi-Speed link. It plays MP3 and Windows Media Audio files. Neatly, you don't need jukebox software to transfer files to the iHP-100 - Windows Explore will do. iRiver claims user get 16 hours of playback from the built-in rechargeable battery; the latest iPods only manage eight hours, while the Nomad Zen can offer 12.

The iHP-100 is currently shipping only in Japan, for ¥49,800 ($419), but MP3Players.co.uk is offering the device on pre-order for £329.95 and expects to ship in a week or so. As yet the player isn't available in the US, but MP3players.co.uk's .com offshoot hopes to offer it when it is, and presumably iRiver's US operation will do so itself.

    Re: IRiver

Yeah, ok, Mr. Parrot, this is the second time you've copy and pasted this into a forum on the iPod. We get it. You love the iRiver. You think the iRiver is better than the iPod. Message received. Now go away...

    re: iRiver

Boy, that article makes it sound like the iPod is a piece of s***. It has half the battery life, doesn't have a backlight and it costs more. If I was a mindless PC clone lover without any class or style, I would think the iRiver was the one to get. NOT!

    No more free ads!!!

Look at the way the guy in the previous post spells equalizer. He's dropped the 'z' and replaced it with an 's'. It's obvious he's a Brit, or at a minimum, a member of the Commonwealth. Also note that the link for the company selling this 'iRiver' is a UK web address. This post, which he has posted more than one time on the MacNN forums, is nothing more than a free ad for his, or his friend's new distribution and sales company. Pathetic. If you want to advertise your product on MacNN, then f****** pay for it like other companies do!
