BuyMusic.com attempts to block Mac users

updated 01:45 pm EDT, Fri July 25, 2003

is now redirecting Mac users to a page that indicates users must be running Windows and Internet Explorer to access the site. MacNN reader Adam Little notes that changing the user agent for Safari to Windows MSIE 6 makes the site load. Mr. Little also notes that Toast Titanium (a Mac-only product) is listed as a top CD-recording software package on the BuyMusic.com front page.

    dont change user agent

one of the main functions of the user agent is for webmasters to monitor which browsers are frequenting site's the most.

changing agents is a short-sighted solution. sure, you get into the site *NOW*. but, by repeatedly hitting these sites with the proper agent, you are telling the webmasters that there are other browsers out there besides the MS tripe.

have you noticed lately how many banks are (slowly) starting to recognize safari users as real customers. this doesnt happen because some manager decides it time to start supporting safari now that its at rev 1.

it happens because either a) legions of irate mac users are bombarding their customer relations department or b) because some webmaster is doing their job, monitoring the agent logs, and deciding support is warranted.

do your part and hit these sites with safari if you want to see change.

    Change? why?

Why would we want to see BuyMusic.com change to adopt mac-users as well as PC-Users?

    (1) they're liers - they say you need windows to run the sight--a really stupid lie (if you're going to lie, at least make it good)

    (2) The site is a pain in the you know what to use! Have you tried it versus iTunes?

    (3) They are stupid. (yea I'm saying it again.) They aparently think "Oh you apple users are so special hu? We'll show you whose special! You won't let us on your service, we won't let you! So NYHEEAAAA!" They apparently forgot that iTunes will be avaliable for Windows this year. woops.

    Please respond:

I think that if BuyMusic.com worked under Safari (without changing the agent) I'd drop iTunes and go to BuyMusic.com. What do you think?
