I submit that the market share for Macs, based on utilization, is greater than that projected on a simple box count.

You are dead on, and Macs are undoubtedly used for a wider variety of things over any office based wintel box.

Seriously not to be snotty, what's your point? We all know or work in Mac offices. This doesn't have any relation to what Apples marketshare is. It's about scale.

I mentioned this in alt.flame.macintosh recently, so it's worth repeating :)

Suppose the market was 100 computers, and Apple sold 5 of them; Apple would have a 5% share. Then suppose the market expanded top 200 computers, and Apple sold 8; Apple would have sold more computers, but dropped to a 4% market share.

The market for copmuter users is constantly expanding, and unless Apple continues to sell computers at the rate of expansion, they WILL lose market share. That doesn't mean they're selling less computers, they're just not matching the market expansion. As always, it's just a numbers game.

I've been using a Mac for 13 years, and I think it's sad how some of you Mac users talk. Where I work and go to school, we're all friendly. We don't harass people and call them names becuase they use a PC. We feel bad for them, yes, but we don't call them trolls and b**** and scream like little 4 year olds. There's a reason why we've gotten over half our computer science department to start using Mac OS X. Calm rational arguments go a long way.

Apple's offering is bad these days. eMac, iMac, PowerBook... these are all the same machine in different casings (800MHz-1GHz G4)... all with a high price tag on them...

Of course, these are nice machines to use, but the conception people have of how to buy a computer is the higher the GHz and the lower the price... and this is a place Apple can't compete....

i'd hate to have this guy using my mac. he resorts to unplugging the mac before trying the usual ways to force it to restart. unplugging is the pc way of shutting down, not the mac way. same old dozer mentality i'm used to hearing. by the way, how old of a mac is he referring to? doesn't sound like os x to me until he mentions the software update bounce (oh yeah and you can turn off the bounce). and the profanity? what kind of reliable source is that? jeremiah is right... ignorant people.

I work in education. All teachers who use macs at school have PCs at home. The point that IDC and Gartner skue to business is false.

Lucky for Apple--- PC users do not hate mac users like mac users hate pc users.

I look around this room and there are one FP iMac and two PCs. In the adjacent room is a PC laptop. Which system gets the most use? The Mac! Since "switching" the PCs get hardly any use. I have XP Home but never installed it. That's still counted though. At what point do these computer counters begin to consider attrition? Macs remain used and usable for a far longer time than PCs as well as retain a higher rate of resale value (can you even get money out of a PC resale anymore?). As long as Apple has *new* users coming to the Mac or prior PC users coming, and making profit then they're doing fine. A single total market share value isn't that important.

What's more important to a developer is what's the Mac's share of the market of your target demographic, how crowded is your target niche on each platform, and which platform's users are more likely to actually purchase your software rather than pirate.

The Mac platform is doing fine. Not great, wonderful, amazing, record expansion (as if Apple could keep up production!) but they're by no means on death's door and I don't believe the number of total Macs in use is shrinking.

Is that ALL teachers in ALL schools in ALL states? Or just where you work? Did you take a poll? Did they tell you the truth or are they just afraid of you?

I know many teachers, and am seeking my degree in education and most of them have Macs at school and PCs as it is usually a budget issue. They cannot just toss the PCs in the garbage, though many of them wish they could and replace them with the more stable Macs.

I think you are wrong, but I won't be making sweeping generalizations about who in education has what, and how much better the Mac is to the PC. I let my friends decide for themselves and have experienced high numbers of people having said, they prefer the Mac, after using it for a while. The problem Macs face are that you need a week of use in order to familiarize yourself with the differences in the interface, and then begin enjoying the experience.

when those articles say personal computer market share, they really aren't talking about personal computer market share, they are talking about x86 vs. Mac market share.
Times are changing and machines that used to be considered Personal computers are now also workstations servers and super computers.
x86 is busting into super computing in a big way, and apple is not. One of the biggest trends in super computing in the last 5 years has been to abondon tradition super computer platforms and to go with clusters of x86 boxes.
the same holds true for x86 replacing rs6000s, sparcs, and alphas as workstations and servers.
In these fields macs have lost ground relative to PCs. So if Macs are lossing ground in some of the sub markets , but are holding ground in the market in general, they most be gaining ground in some of the sub markets, the two notable remaining ones are home personal computers and mobile personal computers.
when you combine this with the longer life span of a mac, the fact that the mac life stan has been increasing over the last 5 or so years, and that most people swirch from a PC to a Mac in the middle of the PCs life while most people who switch from mac to pc do so at the end of the macs life you will see that that static market share really demonstrates growth by apple in their sub markets.

For example, if I go to the new Home Depot, they have Dells. But if you look at the tasks they serve, they have mono-chrome monitor function, for very basic sku# inputs. So if more "units" are being sold, it is only mindless mindshare to say it is actually marketshare . . . I mean, on what tasks are all these machines based upon, right?

Well why is a PC user here? Well I still have 1 mac... The main reason I 'switched' my other computer was the difficulty I had in moving to OS-X... Specifically:

- web sites that used to be accessible are no longer - not even in 9 - and I need them to do my work...

- mail did such a poor job importing my addresses (no groups - 10.1) I've given up trusting Apple for any future data management. (can you say Powertalk). Period.

- two perfectly good printers were orphaned in X but not XP

- X is much slower than 9

- X had (has) no uninstall, no system restore, etc.

X is gorgeous, but has been very difficult & expensive & I finally was driven to exploring the competition - I found it really has a lot that is good to offer especially for the 'money'...

X isn't slower than 9 - it animates window openings, and it does do a few more graphical things, but even on a 450mhz G3, it's not necessarily slower. And in some areas, like Disk-intensive tasks are much faster...

Mail doesn't handle any addresses. That's the address book, and it did get better in 10.2. Eudora was available for OSX, and it always handled groups... You used a different mailer in OS 9, why didn't you keep using it? There are other mailers available for OSX, some of them cost nothing...

Printers - well, I spose that's a valid complaint. Although printers in general are pretty cheap... My printer survived because I bought one that does postscript.

Why do you need an uninstall on the mac? X is about the same as earlier operating systems, where you can easily track down most applications' pieces and junk them - in fact it's easier, because they are not supposed to install all kinds of c*** in various system folders.

Some users bought into all the I-hate-OSX c*** that was being published all around (like on MacFixIt) - I never understood their complaints. The system worked from day 1 - it had most of the features that earlier operating systems did... minus CD burning, but did windoze have cd burning built in the OS at the time? Nope (That was done with bundled software...) so why all the complaining?

Sure 10.0 was slow, but it got fast enough for me in 10.1 and I'm pretty impatient with my computer, especially for operations that shouldn't take a "long" time to complete. As is, my iMac is old enough that it doesn't keep up with my applications the way that I would like it to (not to mention the slow video processing...), but the OS is fine.

They have an incredibly thick membrane over their frontal lobe whitch makes them the way they are: followers not individuals or leaders. Linux PC users are exceptions to this. They have true love for their OS on any platform. The PC Windows f@#k is just concerned about keeping up with the PC Love-F@#King JONSES! Windows users are like terrorists. They do whatever Allah-Miscro$oft wants them to do and they can’t be reasoned with. I know this because I have not met a single level headed PC F@#k in my life. Only people that have a PC and a Mac Can be talked to with a degree of common sense.
