The IT-Enquirer has posted "," an interview with Apple's Tom Boger, the Director Power Mac Worldwide Product Marketing. It covers several topics, including the importance of 64-bit hardware, the use of aluminum for heat dissapation and design considerations, and Apple's initial benchmarking claims.

Hmmm

Reading between the lines Boger seems to be worried that Apple is spreading too thin and not focusing enough on the mac as a platform.

I didn't get the same read on Boger.

Looking closely at where quotation marks begin and end, it appears to me the interviewer was throwing in those comments, not Boger.

Just my 2cents.

Here's How: ArmChair CEO

PowerMac G5 is priced from $2k to $3k
iMac FP G4 is priced from $1200 to $1800
eMac G4 is priced from $800 to $1300

Release another desktop that is priced from $800 to $1800 that is a headless iMac or eMac. Allow customers choice is display and some additional internal expansion (AGP, 1 or 2 PCI). Make all these machines single processor and optical drive at least a minimum of Combo and Video Card with 64MB.

Do that and the Wintel crowd will switch. They will not switch when the best PC at CompUSA or Bestbuy sells for $1200 and the best Mac sells for $2k or even $3k.

What's really sad...

...is that if you are a gamer and you INSIST on using a mac, you MUST have a PowerMac with the best video card to get the same performance a PC half the price can get.

The article only quoted Booger once or twice, but the rest of the article was the speculation of the author. Not much of an "Official" interview!

No, what he's saying is that you don't need all 64-bit applications in order to use more than 2GB (or 4GB, depending who's arguing here) of memory. Basically, imagine if you will firing up a 64-bit version of photoshop and using 4 GB of memory in the process. Now you want to fire up 32-bit Office. This will work, even though Office would be running in the 4-8GB memory space. The only limitation on Office will be that it cannot access more than 2GB of RAM.

Sorry to date myself way back, but the only thing I can think of to compare this to is DOS. If you recall back in the day when PCs had only 640K standard memory, programs tended to want to run in that space. When higher memory machines came out, some could not run in the extended memory portion without being rewritten to support it. In OS X, that wouldn't be the case.

(yeah, I'm being overly simplistic, so sue me)

Right, apparently you thought of something that *no one else* have thought of.

And yes, most people will not benefit from 64-bit processing. If you do benefit, you already know it. If you are not sure whether you will benefit from 64-bit processing, I will bet that you will not benefit from it.

A 32 bit application can access 64 bit memory addressing with a minor update. For example, Photoshop has a single plug-in to do this. Developers don't need to recompile.

So what he is saying is that your application doesn't need to be native 64 bit for access to 64 bit memory addressing. And that's the way it should be considering a 64 bit app won't run on a G3 or G4.

Release another desktop that is priced from $800 to $1800 that is a headless iMac or eMac.

They did. It's the single 1.25 Ghz G4 for $1,299. This is a current system that Apple is selling until they ship a new system that looks like a G5, but is smaller and not as powerful.

The G5 is much more powerful and more expensive than the G4. The lowest price G4 was $1,499 and the lowest price G5 is $1,999. What this means is Apple is going to have a headless CPU in that critical price range to help people switch. Right now. the G4 serves that purpose, but it's the old case design and will be replaced by a new system at some point in the future, and it will have an IBM 970 processor, which will be awesome.

Imagine a 1.6 Ghz IBM 970 Mac CPU for $1,299.

Duh

This is all hype and smoke and mirrors. For one thing, Apple came up with their impressive speed specs (as usual) through dubious means. They did their testing using GCC on Linux. The fact is, an Itanium is about 65% faster on int and 150% faster on fp.

I'm sure the G5 is faster. I'm also sure the average Mac user won't notice the difference. If you want one because it's pretty, buy one. If you think the speed is going to blow you out of the room, I'd say you're setting yourself up for a disappointment.
