Apple's marketshare remains stagnant

updated 10:05 am EDT, Mon July 21, 2003

The Knight Ridder News Service reports that , referring to Apple's Switcher campaign it began last year: "With a year's worth of sales numbers under their belts, three major market research firms show roughly the same thing — Cupertino-based Apple is holding its ground, but the only PC company attracting a lot of switchers is Dell Computer... Research firms Gartner Dataquest and IDC show Dell climbing from about 15 percent of the worldwide PC market last summer to 17 percent this spring. Hewlett-Packard was a close second with about 16 percent. Apple stayed between 2 percent and 3 percent."

    and this surprises who?..

Apples ads, IMHO, are pathetic.. The G5 ads don't give any specs any advanteges.. NOTHING... just a computer punching a hole through a house with Jeff Goldblum telling me its the fastest computer... and how is this supposed to change the minds of the millions who won't touch a mac because their underinformed or misinformed..? it wont.

Apple... people want to know WHY they're buying something... they don't want to just take your word for it.

    uphill battle

Apple's not only fighting against Windows' entrenched market share, but a lousy economy as well. With Windows PCs costing sometimes half as much as an equally-well-equipped Mac, it's hard to justify switching.

Of course, Apple's prices are justified and they keep the company profitable with the market share they have. Clearly Apple is looking towards the iPod and, soon, the iTunes Music Store to expand their market instead of cheaper iMacs. As long as they continue to make a profit, regardless of how they do so, Apple's shareholders are happy. In three years they'll probably be making *more* money with iPods and iTMS users than with their Macs. Such is the evolution of business.

    Misleading

Actually, I believe those numbers are misleading. In the last year, I have seen PC users around me in never before seen number buy macs. At the same time, I have seen many pro mac users wait hold off on purchases, expecting a machine like the G5. So the switchers are there, but instead of complementing traditional mac users, they have replaced them.

I say look at the numbers again in 6 months, and the picture will be quite different after sp many pro users will have upgraded to the new G5s.

    To add to that...

You put an Apple in somebody's pocket, you are more likely to put one on somebody's desk.

    Pricing..

Apple needs to get into the very low cost market to garner more market share. Two tiers of Apple products might do it.They could bring back the "apple line" or add another cheap product brand.

    re: and this surprises...

What the h*** did you want Apple to put in that ad?

"Available: 1.6GHz, 1.8GHz or dual 2.0GHz PowerPC 970 processors, 1GHz Front-Side bus with DDR RAM and NEW! Serial ATA hard drives"

Who, other than yourself and a bunch of techies, would understand anything like that? I understand that the pro market would love to hear that in the advertisements, but that advertisement was not geared towards the pro market. They're geared toward the home user (obviously, since the guy is getting blown through the wall of his house, not his office) and home users usually don't understand the benefits of Serial ATA and fast FSBs and stuff.

Pro users get their information on the web and from other pros. That's why Apple's got a mind-boggling breakdown of the G5 on the website and downloadable tech papers. Apple knows that, and you know where to go to get the inside scoop on the techie stuff.

What more can you say, other than "introducing the most powerful desktop computer ever" that would entice home users?

    re: misleading

I agree as I'm one of those Waiters (as in "waiting for the next big thing"). I'm anxious to update my ibook, but I don't want to make the jump until the next generation of Powerbooks becomes available. But while I was waiting and waiting summer came, I couldn't stand the suspense anymore and I bought a kayak...

So now I'll be waiting ANOTHER year till I get the money again.

We seem to be in a dithery, transitional time for Apple products. The Mac faithful know exactly what they want and they're largely willing to wait since the current machines can do the job adequately for a while, however much everyone may complain about them. But Apple's apparant marketting strategy of keeping future products largely secret to avoid cutting into current sales seems to have reached the end of its usefull life at least with the knowledgeable Mac users.

(please excuse my spelling if it's horrible)

    Dell is a monster...

They really are a marketing, PC as commodity powerhouse. If you're in the PC market (not thinking about switching to mac) people WILL always check them out and their prices... They're cheap... don't get much, but they're cheap.

Apple held it's own. And increased its profit margins and dollar share of the PC pie. The next year should be very interesting.
