    DVD-RAM

Is DVD-RAM like a zip disk, where I can run apps off of it, and use it like a floppy, or do I have to burn it first?

    re:DVD-RAM

DVD-RAM shows up on your desktop like a zip disk on your desktop where you can drag and drop files onto it and selectively delete files. It does not have to be burnt and does not require any extra software (except if you want to use something like retrospect to automate back-ups). I am not sure about access and data transfer rates so I am not too sure how well app's would run off of it. I understand that the firewire to IDE bridge used in most firewire drives is pretty limiting where you will only be seeing about 10MB/sec transfer rates and no where near the potential transfer rate of the underlying IDE device.
