Apple shows new Power Mac G5 commercial

Apple today aired a new Power Mac G5 commercial during the Major League Baseball (MLB) All-Star game today and on other cable channels such as MTV, as noted by several readers. The commercial is not yet available on the Web, but readers say that the television ad shows a guy being "blown way" through the house walls. The commercial ends with Jeff Goldblum, featured in previous Apple commercials, introducing the new Power Mac G5, the "world's fastest computer." MacNN reader Paul Worthington writes: "I spotted the new TV commercial for the PowerMac G5 tonight on Animal Planet. It shows a man blown all the way out through the walls of his house by the power of the new G5 tower, and features Jeff Goldblum on the voiceover. So I captured it and , offering a free iPod and mounting kit with the purchase of 2003 New Beetle sedan buyers with a complimentary Apple iPod.

Not only did the G5 Commercial debut tonight during the All-Star Game but so did the VW New Beetle Commercial "pods unite."

This new promo includes a free iPod and mounting kit with all new Beetles (excluding the convertible).

Overall, it was pretty good exposure for Apple IMHO.

Boring...

It says nothing about the computer other than "it's really fast." Why are Apple's ads for professional products so overly-simple? This is NOT an iMac, Chiat-Day. Give us something of substance....something that shows us something practical that a faster, 64-bit G5 computer can do better than a PC that costs much less.

Effective

This is exactly what works for the masses. The public reacts to simple, emotional, irrational advertising. It's perfect. The pros who actually SHOP for a computer by comparing specs & price don't need a commercial, they'll search out the information. No, this is just the type of ad Apple needs to entice the masses.

To address one of your concerns, I think the line "world's fastest and most powerful personal computer" tells the audience that this machine does more than their PC.

The problem is that what you and the other geeks want is details and lots of em, and you (VERY mistakenly) believe that this is what the public wants too.

No they don't.

This commercial's purpose (it IS only 30 seconds long, remember?) is to INTRIGUE the viewer into visiting apple.com/g5. Once there, those people who are interested in "tech specs" get as much as they can eat ... and those who are not interested have a handy big button that takes them RIGHT to the "how much" page.

Two things to keep in mind:

1. Apple is STILL not interested in the mouth-breather market. This computer is NOT FOR THEM. No amount of advertising is going to change that. So those of you who want Apple to make ads that appeal to knuckle-dragging PC gamers can just KMA.

2. Until recently, VERY EFFECTIVE computer hardware ad campaigns revolved around talking cows and stoner dudes. This is the level of moron we're dealing with here, and again, APPLE DOESN'T WANT EM.

As an enticement for GEEKS to go to apple.com/G5 and check things out, I think this is a VERY good ad and will be very effective. Remember the Memorex tapes with the guy sitting in the chair all windswept? This is playing on that, and should be equally effective.

Yes, I can see it now. Take the first half of the commercial, then stop where you see the wife, and then...

Wife: "What happened, darling"

Guy: "You won't believe it. My new Power Mac G5 just finished that Gaussian blur I was working on in 5 seconds flat. Then I went over and did some major calculations in Mathematica and it helped me solve the Grand Unification theory. I then encoded our wedding video into DV form in like 6 minutes flat (no, honey, I'm not talking about the honeymoon video). After that, I ran "Let1KWindowsBloom" and it only took 16 seconds to run. Finally, since I had some time to kill, I was playing Quake III and was getting 491 FPS before being fragged by some kid in Chicago."

Yeah, that kind of ad would really draw in new users....It sounds so effective, I'm sure everyone else is already making ads like that. Oh, wait, NO ONE does ads that talk real world information. Its Dude this and interns that and "its fast, trust us" over here.

The VW/iPod ad starts with close up s*** shots of the ipod and them zooms out to reveal that it's hooked up to a car mount and then up out the sunroof to reveal a white beetle on white seemless
very SPACE:2001...

I like it.

This commercial did not

debut during the game. I saw it twice earlier in the day. Not sure why a few saw it during the game and that becomes gospel for when it debuted. There's been ongoing discussion at macrumors about how many people had seen it during the day.

It would definately have been better if apple made a commercial of a guy being sucked inside the front of the G5 and blood oozing out the back end. The inside of the G5 must be a friggin wind tunnel.

Ad arguments =polarity...

There are two extremist camps... one saying only emo-
tional "sell the sizzle, not the steak" advertising
works, others, like me, wishing there were ads that
emphasized value, listing useful programs (applica-
tions), ease-of-use, networking, etc. (maybe a split
screen, a static picture of the G5 on one half, and
a movie-credits-style scrolling list (of popular fea-
tures that come free with Apple) on the other half,
ending with where to go to get it. I'd like to see
both kinds of commercials!

mac is going under

I read about the benchmarks they tested against Pentium processors and they fixed it to show G5 faster than pentium 4 3.05Ghz. They lied,try using diagnose.exe and see what you come up with. not what they say I bet.A free program by the way on webgrid
