    Bandwidth

Is the bandwidth--and demand--really there yet?

    too early

this seems a bit premature given the lack of widespread broadband adoption. plus, would apple then incorporate DRM features into a new quicktime player? that could be interesting. maybe even a burn-once feature where, after having downloaded/rented a movie, you could outright purchase the movie with one-click and burn it onto a DVD for, say $10. (+cost of DVD). Incentive for doing it yourself... earlier release date?

    NOT a good idea

Sorry, but it won't work, and the main reason is FILE SIZE. AAC (compressed) song files "work" because there's not much of noticable drop in quality for a 5 MB average-sized file. So you're not losing that much, and the download is fairly fast. But even for moderately crappy video (i.e. most pirated movies), you're talking about 600+ MB files. If you want TV-DVD quality, you need even LARGER files. And unfortunately, the average person just doesn't have the bandwidth to download DVD quality video. So unless apple can offer EXTREMELY inexpensive files, nobody is going to buy. It's much easier to just rent the DVD for $10 and get all the bonus features, etc.

    On another note...

If there is truth to this, that Apple employee that let this slip is out of a job...

    Complete misunderstanding

    Hello,

the orignal article from Berliner Zeitung ( in German, feed it to bubblefish, if you wish )
    http://www.berlinonline.de/berliner-zeitung/wirtschaft/260312.html
Cagni only replied to a question, when the reporter asked if Apple is going to sell movies over the internet just like itunes, that this may be a good idea, nothing more. I don't know how Bloomberg can interprete into this, that Apple is really going to do this anytime soon, if at all.
Perhaps the CIA messed with the transcript of the interview ;-).

    Greetings

    Thomas

    From the interview

    English translation:

Q: Do you think that Apple will some day offer for movies something similar to the Music Store?

A: You mean an internet store for vidoes?

    Q: Yes.

A: I can't tell you. But it is certainly a good idea.

Glauben Sie, Apple wird eines Tages etwas Ähnliches für Filme anbieten wie den Music Store für Musik?

Sie meinen einen Internet-Verkaufsladen für Videos?

    Ja.

Das kann ich Ihnen nicht sagen. Es ist aber sicherlich eine gute Idee.

    New Hardware

Apple would have to put out a new piece of hardware to meet that demand....like perhaps a settop box that have a terrabyte of hard disk space.....like I see that happening anytime soon. If you thought the iPod was expensive, could you imagine a device for downloading and playing movies?

    MPEG-4

The movies would most likely be in MPEG-4 format, which means they be quite a bit smaller then most movies floating around the net. I honestly don't understand why more people aren't using it. Sigma Designs even offers a hardware decoder thats pretty sweet.... wish they had something for macs.
