Apple retail store news

updated 09:05 am EDT, Fri July 11, 2003

MacNN reader Hal Bergman notes that he and a friend and in an effort to be first in line for the new store.

Meanwhile, MacNN reader Christopher Lockhart offered some more details on the Apple retail store we noted in Johannesburg, South Africa: "I went past the store situated in Sandton Square Mall (part of Sandton City Mall) last night and the wraps are off. While the shop looks identical to an AppleStore, it is actually an 'Apple Centre'. As far as I understand, from a conversation I had many months ago, the store is a joint effort with Apple South Africa and a local dealer, Cool Apple Buddy. I think there may be another store opening in Cape Town, as a joint venture with Project 3. Apparently, both these dealers were chosen for their long and successful experience in running a retail store."

    Computer as fetish?

I'm sorry... Macs are cool machines and all.. but spending the night in front of a store!?! To see what? Exactly what you could see at Creative Computers 2 milels away or the Apple Store at the Grove 12 miles away? I'm afraid this is one story the grandkids aren't gonna be too interested in (provided these guys get a chance to add to the gene pool in the first place).

By the way... what's with the above post? Seriously. Is that what dyslexia looks like? Couldn't just be poor typing, right? I'm honestly curious.

Sounds like they finally did a store such that the local Apple dealer(s) don't get killed by them. Good for Apple!

    AppleCentres

Its good to hear about the Apple Centres - one opened about two months ago in Birmingham, United Kingdom. The prices are the same as Apple's Stores but the shops are run by an independent company (KRCS in this instance).

    Get a life

Can I say it any better than that? Sleeping out in front of a computer store just to be the first in it; Good grief - Get out more, meet women, whatever. No wonder everyone thinks that Mac users are all religious zealots.

    Hey Apple

You might consider opening some stores to our friends to the North. Seems kinda silly to open a Store in South Africa before having some open in, say...Toronto, or Vancouver. Just a thought.

    Forget that!

Toronto and Vancouver would never appreciate an Apple Store. They need to open one in Yorkton, or Brandon, or North Bay. Let the faithful do a little driving...

    Apple Centre Makes Sense

It's a pain to sell retail in countries throughout the world, perhaps this exposes Apple to less risk, while keeping local companies in business.

    Apple Centres

Would be nice to see an Apple Centre at the Waterfront mall in Cape Town. Then again, there is the mall near Newlands.
