SmartDisk introduces VST FireRAID software

updated 08:33 am EST, Tue January 9, 2001

SmartDisk today introduced VST FireRAID, a software tool that allows users to use two or more of its external hard drives together to create a fast, reliable desktop Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) array, offering support for mirroring (RAID Level 1): "VST FireRAID is the only Macintosh software product currently available that supports mirroring; it is also the only product that lets users connect more than two FireWire drives together." The $100 software is available for $25 and $50 with the purchase of one or two SmartDisk FireWire or USB/FireWire drives.

    What about LaCie?

This item indicates that VSTs offering is the first product to offer a RAID facility by connecting multiple Firewire devices together. LaCie has provided this facility built in to SilverLining for some time as far as I am aware.

    Raid 1

It seems that Raid 0 -- which provides faster reads/writes by slicing the data between drives -- would be more appealing. Raid 1 is mostly for mirroring -- which allows you to recover data if one of the drives fails -- and two disks don't double your capacity

I bought a EZQuest Cobra 75GB last month and it had a RAID level 1 software built into it's device tools.
