Trans Intl. today announced the "industry's first" 7200 RPM Mobile Hard Disk Drive in 60GB capacity and 2.5-inch form factor designed for notebooks and portable drives. The company says that new 7200 RPM drive offers mobile users desktop-equivalent performance with battery consumption at about the same level as a 5,400 RPM hard drive. The new drive features fluid dynamic bearing technology for quiet acoustics, low power consumption, and improved shock performance (by up to 25 percent).

"The new 2.5-inch drive spins 33 percent faster than its 5400 RPM counterpart, which translates into 15 percent faster data access in notebook computers coupled with 20 percent lower rotational latency and improved average seek time by 20 percent."

It features an 8MB cache buffer and an average seek time of 10 ms as well as a maximum interface transfer rate of 100MB/sec (an Ultra DMA mode-5 Interface: ATA-6). The Hitachi-IBM drive carries a 3-year warranty and is available as an ($430).

    Awesome

I remember paying 500+ for my 60 GB 5400 RPM IBM Thinkstar or whatever they make. This looks bonuc.

    This is HUGE!

If I have a major complaint about any of the laptops that I have owned/used, the drive speed has always blown. This is HUGE imho.

    Nice! I WANT one!

Yes, but can my TiBook actually BOOT from it?

I once swapped out a Fujitsu PowerBook HD for an IBM drive and the new drive would NOT work. After trying several other IBM drives, STILL no luck.

So, the question remains, are they BOOTABLE?
And WHEN can I get one?! ! !

Uh, then that's a bad hard drive, and you've been had. Teaches you to trust ebay, now.

    Don't do it at home

There has not been a single 2.5" IDE drive that does not boot in a PowerBook.

Maybe you shouldn't do it at home.

    3400's and Wall Streets

There were some IBM TravelStar drives which couldn't boot a 3400. Also, there were some drives, installed in a Wall Street, which caused issues with the sleep switch. I think any recent (i.e. last year or two) drive works just fine...

    Power consumption same?

The new drive features fluid dynamic bearing technology for quiet acoustics, low power consumption, and improved shock performance (by up to 25 percent).
The article implies it, but "low power consumption" is not the same as "same as a 5400 RPM drive".

It's probably close otherwise people would not upgrade to them in their laptops.

Wonder if Apple will use them in shipping systems?

    Excellent Drive

I have installed it in my 17"PB.
Compared with the stock Toshiba MK6021GAS (60Gb 4200rpm), initial tests shows the following:

    3% decrease in battery life
almost 40% increase in hard disk speed
almost 7% increase in overall notebook performance

It is extremely silent and does not run any hotter than the original drive.
