Columnist: G5 gives Mac platform credibility

updated 01:20 pm EDT, Fri June 27, 2003

Whether or not the new Power Mac G5 really is the "worlds most powerful personal computer" as Apple's marketing claims is a should be in full throttle. Apple and AMD are faced with declining market share. Both companies, however, have come out with products that will rival Intel's. Any advantage they can obtain--test results, customer wins--will suffice."

    already at par

TheMac was already "at par" with Windows PCs.

The only area where Macs were behind was in regards to raw speed. In every other way, Macs were ahead.

Macs have had better security, less vulnerability to virii, more stability, etc. Windows PCs have had speed; now they do not even have that.

A G5 running Panther will be much better than "par" - it will be a "hole in one."

    I declare a cease fire

Okay, enough whining about the benchmarks, the Mac has geek cred again.

If you use a Mac, get a G5 and you will not be disappointed.

If you are considering switching, now is a good time (or at least the end of August is).

If you are an Ars or /. Lunix troll, go somewhere else. No one cares about compiler esoterics or hyperthreading (emulating dual CPUs) over in the Mac camp. We care about true DDR RAM support, AltiVec, FireWire et al.

And its Mac, not MAC. Its Mac OS X, not MACOS X. Its Xserve, no xServe or Xserver.

    Got it?

    OK

I like the article. However, the guy who said "The Mac was already "at par" with Windows PCs." was incorrect. Sure, we may have a better OS but that's it. We were behind in virtually every hardware selections with exception of firewire.

    Credibility... AGAIN?

    WHAT do these DOSheads smoke?

Macs may currently be a bit slower at certain tasks, running certain tests, but they have ALWAYS been and remained a driving force in the computer industry.

WHERE would Microsoft and Dell, et al exactly BE without continually aping Apple and the Macintosh?

3 .5" floppies. Then NO floppies.
    Laser Printers.
    24-bit color.
    USB. FireWire. Airport.
    REAL industrial Design.
    iPod.
    The Mac OS itself!

C'mon, get over the market share thing already! Macintosh has ALWAYS broken trail and opened new territory!

    G4 vs G5?

But then there's the REAL question - whether a 1.6 G5 is any faster than the Dual 1.25 G4 currently $200 less and AVAILABLE. Anyone?

f*** you ignorant a******. Who are you to tell me, another Mac user, what I care? I am interested in compilers and the others things you may not be in.

    gamers

The mac is still behind in terms of the variety of games people can play and how well they play on them. But its getting better. Some people prefer using a computer to play games, especially online games like Unreal Tournament 2003 and the like. There are alot of people out there that do this, it isn't a market to ignore, and it takes a FAST system to run them well, in high resolution, with all the graphic goodness that they are capable of.

You forgot to add the Mac invented sliced bread, discovered fire, manned the first flight, and Steve Job s******* your mom which resulted in you! Oh well, Apple can't be perfect.
