I've got a Quicksilver and just ran it. Everything went fine. Why is "strongly recommends" scary?
You're pretty simple, aren't ya fella?
so as in the rare chance something does happen you don't blame us : )
... are to be feared!
Luckily, it didn't find anything to update on my
setup. Whew.
Apple expects everybody to somehow have a blank 80GB external drive laying around.
If this one works the same as the OS 9 updater they posted earlier, this one may -damage- your drive..
It ruined my harddisk (I cannot read or even -format- the drive) ..
I think I will try this update on my ruined drive.. however,
1) I hope it will find the drive..
2) The OS 9 updater did only mention that it had found -a- drive that needed updating.. but not -which- one that was... how am I going to find out which drive it will try to update? Because I don't want to destroy two drives!
I didn't realize anyone still used 9.
Are you kidding- the money invested for years on burners, scanners... nice that the capability is there. Teachers don't get paid enough to upgrade every month! :-)
i own a G4 digital audio
i bought recently a new hard drive (western digital 60 gig) to replace the original drive (maxtor 40gig) wich was defective. i installed os x without any problem but during the download/installation of the updates (wich included Hard drive update 1) the computer went to sleep by itself (i had forgot to put energy saver to 'never sleep'). when i woke it up, it restarted immediately but was unable to boot the os; neither os x installer cd. so i used os 9 cd restore to format with disk utility wich worked then re-install osx wich worked but then crashed when using one of my soft (reason 2.5 in that case) and again unable to boot the os. that time i was able to load os x installer cd and to verify the disk with disk utility wich said: invalid B-tree node size. so i chose to repair wich seemed to work but when i verified it again, it wasn't repaired and said the same thing. so i tryed with os 9 cd restore but it was worse, impossible to scan and just said that 'drive is probably unusable'.
i went back to the store, telling them only that i was unable to format the drive (just to be shure they would not refuse) and know i have again a new drive, wondering if the problem was the updater or the fact that it went to sleep during installation.
Is the hard drive update 1 necessary?
if not i just won't install it

Scary...
STRONGLY recommends, huh? Almost sounds like it's known to have hosed several drives during testing.
