OSX?

Will apple release Mac OS X today? There's almost no software for it, so what's the purpose of using it? Even Internet Explorer 5 doesn't work well, has few bugs in itself.
Aren't you people felling strange on OS X? it's like being on an unknown planet, you have no idea where anything is.
Also I am using new G4 with dual 450MHz and with 384MB of RAM, to me it seems like OSX isn't that fast how it was expected, in fact it's even slower that OS 9.04.
What you think and what's your experience?

I Love the new OS it rocks. I don't know where you get off saying its slower. I to have A G4 Duel 450 with only 128mb of RAM. You say its like being on another planet? No really!? It's A deffrent OS you r*****. I just bought My G4 about 4 mouths ago So i'm not that Great with running OS 9 yet So I Really look forward to OS X! Apple Get your damn a** in gear And get Motrola to pump up the MHz!!!! Other wise I Love my Mac!

OS X

I'm not afraid to learn something new. And it's not that different. Also I've heard that it will be much faster in the final realease. What we've seen so far is a beta you know. Of course there are all it's advantages. I think once it's finished it will catch on.

OS X?

No Software for Mac OS X? All of my favorite day-to-day utilities are already ported over, and have been for months. Major applications are currently lacking Carbonized versions, but they'll never come if Apple never releases OS X. Besides, Apple has a very good relationship with the major software makers. Adobe, Microsoft, Macromedia, etc, will all have their software ready to go right along side Mac OS X's release. Count on that.

Mac OS X is a brand new and amazing operating system. If you try and use it like Mac OS 9 or earlier, you will find it clumsy and bloated. If you learn to take advantage of it's superior navigation capabilities, you will find that it's the slickest GUI ever.

Here's an interesting fact: You're not using Mac OS X, you are using Mac OS X PUBLIC BETA. What you have is merely the 3D blueprints for what will be the fastest, slickest OS that has ever run on your Dual 450Mhz G4 with 384MB of RAM. Wait until the final version ships. Then, purchase it, install it, and invite all of your friends over (PC and Mac alike) to let them admire your beautiful speed demon. Be prepared to watch them cry with envy.

In my experience, I can see that Mac OS X is going to be the best upgrade you will ever be able to purchase for any Mac. Just DON'T try and use it like it were Mac OS 9.

Lighting...

Much of the pictures show crew focus the booth lighting. To do that, people often turn off the other lighting in the venue.

bloated?

Lets not go too far there, Cory. MacOS 9 is like pure adreneline after using MacOS X PB for a while. Yeah, yeah, the final will be faster. That still doesn't mean the beta isn't bloat-city.

And no, the MacOS X PB GUI is c***. From pics posted on the forum, they look to have fixed most of the issues, but it was absolutely awful in the PB. Even a task as simple as copying a file became painful and slow. Stop being an apologist.

Anyway, with new rumors about Apple buying SoundJam, UMA-2 pretty much confirmed, etc. tomorrow should be good(err, today actually, 9 hours away)

Calm down

OS X is so slow because most of the operating system code has not been fully compiled. It is put together so people can debug it. It is compiling on the fly, everything you do, so be proud that your G4 is buff enough to do that. Think of what might happen if you didn't compile all of Windows 2000 on a PC!

I agree OSX is strange a little bit but it is all because it is built on UNIX. The files and different folders - it's not like in OS 9 in System Folder where you know what every piece of file does and where everything goes. I guess we will have to learn UNIX and start learning all over again :(

Don't be afraid of 'learning all over again'. You don't have to. But when you dig a bit deeper - and I hope you will, you'll see an operating System that actually works the way you want it to - not the other way around. If your not afraid of typing a few commands on the shell, you'll love the way UNIX handles things - or, better put, you handle things on UNIX.

Software for OsX 1.0

Has there ever been available native software at a startup for a new OS?
Even the first mac in 1984 was acompanied bij apple's own software (macpaint etc)

We should be lucky, we have more native software already than let's say W2000 or the early past-away OS/2 and maybe even windows95 when it came out.

Always Like This?

I could be completely missing the boat here, but until now I've never seen a piece of advertising from Apple that acknowledges OS X's UNIX underpinnings (see "...the Power of UNIX" in their booth banner). The inclusion (or should I say FUSION) or UNIX with the new Mac OS seemed to be a dirty little secret for Apple, and only the die-hards really knew or cared about it. I'm wondering if they're going to use that slogan when the software finally hits the street retail. I guess it all boils down to whether Joe Consumer will care about UNIX, or know what it is.

All I know is this: the fact that OS X is UNIX based speaks volumes of what "could be" -- I think there is going to be some incredibly exciting stuff coming around the corner, OS / Software related, in the near future. The signposts are all there. Apple just needs to fill them in.

Osx - Nextstep

Nextstep was revolutionary in its way, it was missing the marketing power, now that apple is marketing MacOsX alias Nextstep, we won't get microsoft scenarios....good marketing, bad software...

we have both now, good marketing and an even better product...with nifty little features...

I like OS X PB alot!

The first poster was whiming about the OSX PB being slow on his super duper G4..HELLO, that's the BETA version you moron!!! I've read quite a few reports on the net that say builds after the PB have been optimized and most of the PB's issues have been fixed. Steve will have something big this morning for X, so to that crybaby i want to say "shut up, listen to the Man, and be ready to place your pre-order after the keynote".

No kidding its a beta. It also is a monumental step backwards for user friendliness. The critical desktop metaphor is a mere shadow now, and the dock tries to be too many things. I hope OS X doesn't come out until 2002--only then would Apple have enough time to do the job right.

Clearly, opinions vary. If you really are a loyal Mac user, then you're smarter than the average Windows user, and "figuring out" OSX shouldn't be a problem for you. I didn't have any problem working with OSX.

We're supposed to be talking about the booths at MWSF here, anyway, not OSX. Nobody's going to push OSX down your throat; don't use it if you don't want to.

Good riddance to 9

Os9 may be faster in immediate responsiveness when the Os isn't doing anything but OS9 sucks when it comes to any sort of real multitasking. Try exporting a big quicktime movie - in OS9 you are stuffed, under OSX you can go ahead and do other things.

I don't understand how copying a file can be slower seeing as the windows appear the same and the end result is the same. Please illustrate?

I find almost everything except window resizing to be faster in X. Certainly it has improved my workflow no end. No more waiting til Os9 gives me back my cursor. The Classic MacOS was designed for responsiveness to it's own cost which is why things just stop working on the Mac when you hold the mouse button down. Perhaps a good decision back in 1984 - c*** for the modern day.

Glad to be rid of it.

It'll Be Like the Cube

I think it will be graphite / translucent without as many curved edges as the iBook. Keep in mind this is something lots of suit wearing business types use also, so it must adhere to the color standards of previous powerbooks, not the key-lime stuff.

Uh, maybe it's time for the suits to change? Any businessman who wants to sacrifice speed and elegance for a box with straight edges can buy a Dell or an IBM.

Few things do better at displaying creativity, intelligence, individuality, and power than a PowerBook.

Don't worry, the next PowerBook is going to blow your doors off.

Time for the Suits?

Hi,

Ya can't exactly say "it's time for the suits to change." Apple can't make people change, they can only sell things that people will buy. Lots of people balked at the blue G3s, and now Apple sells graphite. It's a cooler look anyway, I think. Kind of svelte.

But anyway, nocompany should expect their customers to "change" because they're "stupid" or "behind the times" or something - every company should try to sell products to the customers that exist... because they're the ones who buy them.

Even if Apple releases OS X it isn't ready. Too slow, and the interface is too clunky and ponderous. I'll be using 9.1 for a long time before I switch over to that pretty bimbo of a GUI: OS X.

Apple / Palm Announcement

FileMaker and Palm issued a joint press release and of today's Expo keynote announcing that FileMaker mobile is ready to roll for the PalmOS. Could this be the beginning of further Apple / Palm announcements in the coming days, hours, minutes? We shall see. It is uncharacteristic for Apple to issue press releases just ahead of Expo. Perhaps this is deliberate, perhaps its a flub that it was released early (let's hope that Steve Jobs doesn't get as pushed out of shape as he did by last year's ATI announcement)

To the poor guy in Belgium: if you work in such an anal company, switch jobs.

In my company I use Linux/Intel on a PC, Linux/PPC on a Mac for development of embedded PPC systems (dual booting with OSX actually but it's mostly under Linux/PPC so that developers can test natively). I put off buying a Mac (powerbook) for myself until newer models come (hopefully later today but I'm not in a hurry: I'll only need it when a new baby comes to enlarge the family in June). I don't care if other people use Windows in the company, but for me it's clear and the managment knows: if I don't have the freedom to use the machine I want and the OS I want, I quit.

I have to admit that I have an advantage: I maintain my systems and never ask anything to the people who should be in charge of computers since I often know better and it's often the case that I have to help them, which I do as long as it's not 'Doze related (I have used Windows at some point in the past, but there is no way I'll go back since I switched to Unix, that's why I want MacOSX. OS9 is nice, but too fragile and unreliable for the kind of tasks I run).

On the systems which I control, it's Microsoft or me (to be exact or I won't touch them with a 20 feet pole, so somebody else will have to deal with crashes, reinstalls, etc...). For now I'm winning. Don't get me wrong, I have to admit that the first setup of my diskless embedded machines with Linux/PPC was quite tough, but now that I have written a few shell scripts, I can add a new system in less than 10 minutes and I maintain quite a lot of these machines from a server: it takes me less than 1 minute/month/machine. The initial investment was large but the
maintenance burden is extremely low: Windows is just the opposite and becomes unmanageable when you are responsible for lots of machines. Remote administration and scripting capabilities are essential in an OS, Windows lacks tremendously in both departments (actually the lack of a decent scripting language prevents me from calling Windows an OS).

Freedom to download from the Internet on your machine at work is fundamental also. If you are stuck with Windows, I understand this limitation however, since the only rich part of the Windows experience is the viral part.

Sorry for other people but most belgians should understand the following joke which unfortunatley can't be translated into English:
