Licensing problems hamper Euro iTunes Store

Attempts by Apple to of its online "Music Store", where people can download individual songs, has been held up until next year by disputes between record companies and their artists over licensing, according to The Independent: ""In Europe the legal environment [for licensing songs for download] is more complicated than in the US, so the one-price-fits-all system that the US uses is difficult to do here. And the major labels themselves haven't sorted out their rights."

    Western Hemisphere!

I concur with the above posters. Canada and Mexico first, followed by the UK (who are not in the EU -- and say wasn't the EU supposed to make things like this easier?) and Japan. Then South America (which is likely to produce HUGE music sales).

The rest of the world to follow on after that.

    EU

I don't know what UK you're talking about, but the UK I live in is very much part of the EU.

    Canada...

Since Canadian custommers pay a copyright levy on every blank cd they buy, they don't need an iTunes music store... They have alerady paid the copyrights...

    US - EU

From what I understand, an artist in the US usually gives his rights to the record company In Europe, he'll keep his rights. Which makes it harder to determin who gets what.

    Re: Canada
The same thing applies to France and Belgium, probably other countries as well. In Belgium, the legal owner of a CD can even make copies for his private use.

    WTF?

    Stupid artists. Stupid music industry.

Do you want to SELL MUSIC to me? Then get with the program. I'll stick to illegal downloading until then!
