Apple debuts iChat AV, iSight video camera

updated 04:45 pm EDT, Mon June 23, 2003

", 0, 0);

Apple today released iChat AV software application and the iSight digital video camera, which enables high-quality video conferences between two Mac users over any broadband connection and features audio conferences on slower dial-up connections. iChat AV is a feature of the upcoming release of Mac OS X 10.3 "Panther," and is available as a public beta today for Mac OS X version 10.2 "Jaguar."

Apple says that iChat AV requires no set up or configuration beyond installing the software and plugging in any FireWire video camera and microphone: "Buddies with audio or video conferencing capability automatically show up in your buddy list, and initiating a video or audio conference is as simple as pushing one button."

Though works with any FireWire video camera, Apple's iSight digital video camera was designed for video conferencing, delivering sharp images and clear sound through its built-in, dual-element noise-suppressing microphone: "Smaller and lighter than most cell phones, iSight has a unique center mount design. iSight is a small, light and incredibly portable aluminum alloy camera that features a custom designed lens with auto-focus and a high-end CCD sensor to provide high- resolution images and full-motion video at up to 30 frames per second. iSight includes an integrated microphone that suppresses ambient noise for crystal- clear digital audio. The camera will automatically adjust color, white balance, sharpness and contrast to provide high-quality images with accurate color reproduction in any lighting conditions.

iSight is designed to be center-mounted on the top of any computer screen and uses its integrated tilt and rotate mechanism to easily position the camera for natural, face-to-face video conferencing. iSight is smaller and lighter than most cell phones and extremely portable. With all audio, video and power provided by a single FireWire cable, simply clipping the compact iSight camera to any PowerBook® G4 or iBook® for convenient on-the-go video conferencing, makes it easy for travelers to keep in touch with family, friends and business associates while they are on the road.

The time-limited iChat AV public beta is available immediately for free download at , and requires Mac OS X version 10.2.5 "Jaguar." Video conferencing requires a PowerPC 600 MHz G3. The final version of iChat AV will be included as part of "Panther" and will also be downloadable from Apple for $30 as a standalone upgrade for users of Mac OS X v10.2.5 "Jaguar" or later. The iSight video camera is available today through the Apple Store and Apple Authorized Resellers for $150. It requires the iChat AV public beta and Mac OS X v10.2.5 "Jaguar" or later.

Who wants to try it out?

I've got my FireWire camera working in iChat AV but haven't been able to find anyone to test it with. Message me if you have your camera working and want to try it -- nick is0b (that's a zero).

    iChat AV should be free

$29.95 for iChat AV seems very expensive. At the very least, it should be bundled at no cost with $149 iSight.

I guess I will get iChat AV for "free" when I upgrade to Mac OS X 10.3 "Panther".

    Funny bit

I downloaded the iChat AV and installed. I had my formac DV/TV plugged in and voila...broadcasting my signal over iChat. The strange part was that the image was inverted. I wonder what caused that.

Nick...tried to find you online but couldn't.

    Peace,

    Jack

    eh

    Jack-
I meant nick as in "nickname." I should have said the "screenname" is is0b (with a zero)

    compatibility

Cross-platform compatibility is going to be the buying decision for me. I want to be able to talk to my relatives, who are all on PCs using QuickCams... right now, sounds like iChatAV can't talk to them.

    iChat A/V on G3?

    http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n93206

Looks like iChat won't be able to do videoconf if you don't have a G4. Man that sucks. Must be because the codec requires the G4 for its RTS. I imagine they are using mpeg4 or some H.263 variant though, so it should be technically possible if they wanted it to be. Another case of them trying to gauge us for every last penny. Did I mention this sucks!

I just checked the website and in a couple of places, it mentions as does above that all that is required is a G3 600. This obviously contradicts what's in the Apple support doc I linked above. What's up with that? So, do Firewire cameras and iChat A/V work on G3 systems? Please tell us if they do. Maybe the tech doc was for the pre-beta (alpha) release?

    Inversion

Jack and I found a strange bug (or technical limitation?): outgoing video is horizontally inverted on the sender's screen and correct on the receiver's screen. Odd.

    iMac DV 400Mhz

I don't have a firewire camera, but the setup screen for iChat AV seems to display a "video not supported on this computer" filler screen, and clicking next just chugs through the rest of the installation.

I agree iChat should be compatible with other video chat apps.... does AOL have integrated video yet? Maybe AOL will license the iChat AV technology from Apple?

Finally... I hope we find iSight "integrated" into next generational iBooks, iMacs, and Professional displays.... this would give Apple a true advantage... everyone who (eventually) buys a mac from that point on would be ready to video chat straight out of the box.

Also useful would be the ability to take snapshots with the iSight and send them as MMS to new cellphones like the Ericsson P800.

    iSight + MMS

If the iSight acts as a normal FireWire cam, which I have every reason to suspect it would, then you could just use QuickTime Pro 6.3 to encode into the codec supported by multimedia phones - they made a big deal of that capability in the 6.3 release notes.

    Re iChat AV on G3

The kb doc says you can't use DV cameras with iChat AV on G3's. You can still use firewire webcams on those machines.
