Wolfram Research today announced the release of , a version of its technical computing software. Mathematica 5 can outperform dedicated numerical systems in raw computational speed, offering up to a 1000x performance improvement and over 100 new algorithms for symbolic and numeric computation. It offers support for fast sparse matrix operations;; numerical solvers for ordinary/partial differencial equations, new algorithms for solving equations and inequalities symbolically; an integrated solver for differential algebraic equations; expanded support for vector and array functions in numeric solvers; .NET/Link for integration with Microsoft's .NET; import/export of DICOM/PNG/SVG formats; and an optimized version for 64-bit hardware and operating systems.
