Apple AirPort 3.1 gets final 802.11g spec

Apple has released , which is available via the Software Update:

  • It includes v5.1 of the AirPort Extreme base station firmware. Instructions for updating the base station firmware can be found in AirPort Help.
  • This update is compliant with the final IEEE 802.11g specification for both the AirPort Extreme base station and AirPort Extreme client.
  • Additional new features include AirPort Extreme base station and client support for Interference Robustness, which provides improved performance when 2.4GHz devices like cordless phones and wireless video distribution system cause significant interference with the AirPort network, simpler WDS setup within the AirPort Admin Utility, and more.

    Why is Apple even bothering updating this stuff? As I've read here in the forums on MacNN, Apple is so far behind PCs in both speed and price, no one uses them anymore.

    This now supports third party wireless devices using the broadcom chipset.
    I am on a PMG4 with the Buffalo 54Mbps PCI adapter and it runs great!

    if you want to use 802.11g on older machines, this is your ticket.
    You must use broadcom chipset device.
