Indie labels could double songs at ITMS

Apple's enlistment of Indie Bands could to 400,000 in the next four months (currently the store advertises a 200,000 song collection). Rolling Stone, who says that Apple is not charging for premium placement, is offering the same deal to all labels (including the major record labels), but that Apple faces challenges in trying to get kids to buy music: "One key concern among labels is figuring out how to let kids who don't have credit cards buy music. 'You look at Apple's most downloaded tracks, and it's U2, Coldplay and Sheryl Crow. Our label has a much younger demographic." Apple reps say they are looking into stored-value cash cards teens could use for music purchases.'"

    debit card

    Kids:
Have your parents sign for a debit card at a bank at which they do business. You get your own account, they can transfer money into it easily, and you get a debit card which you can use at Red Robin or the iTunes store. Have fun!!

    purchase association...

    simple solution.

How do kids get money in the real world? They don't work full time, usually allowance saved from parents.

So why can't parents give their kids a few songs? "Mom, I'd like to buy 5 songs instead of my allowance this week".... what's wrong with people today? Don't any journalists use their @#$%ing brains anymore? It's like Amazon believes I bought all the movies on my account for me. This is why web analysis of consumer trends can never work. I buy stuff for my neighbourhor's kids, mixed in with things for me, and things for his friend's friends. You can't tell which is which when you look at the things I bought at amazon, yet amazon believes I am interested in Harry Potter based on my prevoius purchases. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. Especially since nobody I know is interested in Harry Potter, and the video was bought for someone far away... heh

I don't know any adults who listen to Coldplay or Sheryl Crowe either. And most "kids" do not own a Mac, they use their parents'. Why insist on technology when simple social interaction will suffice? Talk about over-enging something...

    Kids are our future.

I would think that young adults would be the main target here with the indie labels (and god bless'em for trying). After getting the indie (please more punk and hardcore) maybe the ITMS can focus on that classic rock that a great deal of it's users are looking for.

    Easy grandpa.

I'm an adult and I listen to Coldplay and Sheryl Crow... but once a kid always a kid.

    RE:purchase association..

You write, "This is why web analysis of consumer trends can never work." That's false. Though Amazon may have a fuzzier picture of what you're interested in for your own consumption because you also buy for others, the fact of the matter is that at the end of the day you're the one making a transaction. Thus since they know you buy c*** for your neighbor's kids, you're quite likely to do it again (ie bday, xmas, etc) and thus advertising such products to you when you log in is highly beneficial to them for getting your money down the road.

    This really is an issue

14 and 15 year olds make up a huge percentage of music sales, and the *last* thing they want to do is go beg their parents every time they want a song. They want to hang out at the Sam Goody at the mall and feel independent. And more power to 'em.

At the very least, Apple should have gift certificates that anybody can use with the right code.
