    Fried Surprises

I'm surprised John Fried even mentions Apple. His omission of everything Mac in his weekly tech columns is legendary. Not that he bashes Apple. He simply seems to dismiss it as not newsworthy.

    Right on

the "Globe and Mail" article is pretty much right on about MS claiming innovation rights to old and well known technology and design that has been around for years even though they are late to the table. Even MS adding the "windows" key to the keyboard is just MS stealing from the late '70's Apple II series of computers. Of course, Apple added the "open apple" and "closed apple" keys to make it simple for anyone of any age to pull up the help menu back in those days and MS has added the "windows" key presumably to force keyboard makers to have to advertise for MS. If you use Linux, you may very well have to reach over a key with the windows logo on it in order to type. Just another example of MS taking someones "good" idea and using to do "bad".

    M$ innovation

Sun had a laser mouse in the '80s, well before M$ "innovated" it.

    Works both ways

I have a black Logitech Elite keyboard. It has a Windows key on it that doubles as the option key when plugged into a Mac. But it is not written 'Windows' it is the "flying windows" logo blotch.

It also has an Apple key that doubles at the alt key when plugged into a PC. This has the "open apple" logo on it, so PC users will have to reach over it most of their day! (And it's a much nicer logo than the blotch.)

Nice keyboard BTW. It's pretty cool being able to control iTunes or QuickTime Player volume from the keyboard (has a spin dial at the top).

    Re: Works both ways

The "flying windows" blotch is on all windows keyboards. It is a lame button in that it opens the start menu. If you hit it by mistake you need to close the start menu before you can continue typing. The apple key is simply a modifier that does nothing without hitting another key simultaneously. Just a simple example of MS putting money ahead of user experience. The apple key is just there for nostalgia, as it no longer functions like it did in the early days of Apple. Some apple keyboards don't have the apple on the command key anymore. So in a nutshell, Apple innovated putting their corporate ID on the keyboard, used it for several decades and now is in the process of eliminating it due to obsolesence. MS, on the other hand, has only recently caught on to the idea and has screwed it up completely.
