Compal to manufacture 15.4" PowerBooks

updated 04:15 pm EDT, Fri June 13, 2003

The Digitimes reports that "Compal will start for Apple in the second half of this year, with initial monthly shipments estimated at 30,000-40,000 units. Compal is currently producing 17-inch PowerBooks, while Quanta Computer and Asustek Computer are contract manufacturing the 15.2- and 12.1-inch models, respectively, sources said."

Isn't that the kind of leak that gets companies in trouble with apple?

And I thought I've been reading that Apple has so many of the 15" powerbooks in stock they can't even release their new ones, which are also piled high to the ceiling somewhere waiting for the old ones to disappear. Why would they need to manufacture more?

...I'll just be happy if Apple releases SOMETHING already. Tired of waiting in anticipation for these new products to show up.

G5 in the 15"

Aka the 970 chip is INSIDE these babies. They are being held until later on this month. Everyone attending the conference will get a free one that is secured to the underside of the chairs, so be there early and get a "seat".

I don't know about the rest of you suckers, but if the same company is going to build my Mac and ACER computers, that doesn't bode well for maintaining Apple quality...unless ACER is set to come back anew and overthrow DELL!

G4 not 970

I put the chances of this new Powerbook having a 970 in it at ZERO. The 970 is quite clearly not designed to be a laptop chip, end of story.

I think a lot of people are setting themselves up for a big fall. It's painfully obvious that the company's tower line needs the "oomph" from the 970 *far* more than the portables do -- the portables are still head and shoulders above their Wintel counterparts with no change in sight.
