Quark 6 ships next week, upgrades in 90 days

Several MacNN readers wrote to clarify the Quark Xpress 6 shipping date confusion: "I also ordered the Quark 5 upgrade this week with a free upgrade to Quark 6 when release. The person at Quark who took my order told me that I was guaranteed to receive version 6 within 90 days of its release, but that Quark Xpress 6 [new orders] would indeed start to ship next week."

so what now? do we get that piece of c*** next week or not? i guess they're still not sure yet. maybe 6.0 is so buggy that they'd rather wait for another 90 days or womething like that...

    90 DAYS!!!?!?!

Way to stick it to your existing customers, Quark! You customer service continues to astonish! Thanks!

Haven't heard an upgrade price yet, but, if they want a grand for a full version, I'll guess it is more than a new copy of InDesign.

    whatever.

Buy 5.0 and get $100 off 6.0! What a joke. I will continue to go out of my way to find or convert printers to use Indesign(It's not that hard to do). It's about principle. Quark craps on it's customers.

    Quark

Um, Quark has had a "upgrade to 5.0, get 6.0 for free" promotion running for months. So perhaps stop whining?

You also might want to consider that some people prefer XPress over InDesign, in the same way some prefer Freehand over Illustrator.

    It's not whining...

Um, I believe I expressed a PREFERENCE to Indesign in my post. My feeling is that some feel they have no choice when it comes to page-layout software and believe they are FORCED to buy 6.0.

    $100 off??

They offered me, as a corporate customer, a free upgrade to 6.0 if we decided to buy 5.0 even 10 months ago!
So if I had bought 150 licenses back in August 2002... I would then automatically receive version 6.0 sometime this year.

Too bad they didn't offer this to everyone!

And, no, we didn't get 5.0 anyway.

    No firm date

The controversy over release date is far from over. Some have receive note from Quark of late month release for their upgrades, Apple pulled from their site's homepage the tag that said full version "available next week" and emails sent from Apple through their eNews now says that "Quark 6 intends to ship at the end of the month". While Quark has mixed official versions also, it seems nobody knows for sure. All this is another sign of the bad organization they have suffering from for many years... and a hint of what to expect!

    Easy to switch, Ha!

"I will continue to go out of my way to find or convert printers to use Indesign(It's not that hard to do)."

Yeah, most of the printers I deal with are reeeaaalll easy to convert their process and production routines. Of course, they have nothing better to do then switch and change whatever for the sole purposes of one client. I mean, come on buddy, if you had any real experience in Professional design instead of just designing your family newsletter for printing out at Kinko's, you may understand that there is a lot more involved to change.

The best and most reliable printers that I deal with have perfected their press production routines over many years. InDesign is still very new to the scene and that's why it hasn't caught on. Remember, nobody was using v.1 religously like Quark. v.2 is much better and InDesign is obviously gaining steam, and Adobe has done a good job promoting pdf for printing. But that's just it, solid pdf workflows and productions are still 1-2 years off for most printers. It will happen, and maybe Indesign will become THE choice for designers and printers alike, but for now, Quark 6 will nicely fill the gap.

I am getting tired of all the people coming here and bashing what they don't understand. Go out and buy a PC so you can really fit in with the rest.

    Easy switch, Ha!

A production artist is not a "professional designer".
