Quark guarantees XPress 6 delivery by August

updated 08:40 am EDT, Thu June 12, 2003

MacNN reader Adam Yellin (and others) report that Quark representatives are not supporting the "next week" ship date announced for Quark 6, as noted by Apple earlier this week: "I just spoke to Quark about ordering the Quark 6 update and was told that Apple should not have posted that Quark 6 will be released next week. They said only that it will be released before July 31 and would not guarantee anything earlier."

    Next week, next month...

next year... It'll be out sometime. I'm sure. I won't care, so it don't matter to me. Just funny that the marketing people, the press event people, and the production people, can't figure it out. I mean, they've had 2 years to get together and settle on a date.

    Too little too late

    Try switching to InDesign.

    This is nonsense!

    Here's a quote:

"Quark Inc. communication manager Glen Turpin told MacCentral that this was the result of a communications problem that the company is taking "corrective action" to remedy. "Some time ago we told [our customer service personnel] that we were going to ship by July 31 at the latest," Turpin said, "but obviously we announced yesterday that we'll ship next week, and their current responses should be in line withthat announcement."

"I absolutely want to reassure you that QuarkXPress 6 will ship next week," said Turpin."

    1 week... 7 weeks...

I don't think a few weeks (4-7) is going to make or break Quark 6. And for those that say "Switch to InDesign" that's easy when you are running a mom and pop operation, but when you have YEARS of Quark files that you need to work with at a seconds notice, F@#$ InDesign and the time involved in properly transforming the original. Quark 4.11 is a ROCK... It's old and dusty and isn't very forgiving, but the printing industry LOVES it because 1) It make it more difficult to do dumb things design-wise (still easy, but slightly harder) and 2) Unlike InDesign, Quark doesn't change all that often. Design firms and printers alike don't like change... they just want to make money (like the rest of us).

I have never worked with a printer that has said "We can't read Quark files"... Most of them say that they can "take" InDesign files... but they in turn outsource them to another agency...

I think the Quark "upgrade" (aka the VERY LONG overdue application) will just solidify OS X as a premier operating system. By Quark taking their good old time, some people have made the transition to InDesign (h***, I even have it on my dock and use it rather frequently), but Quark IS the standard in Desktop Publishing... Now that Quark 6 is around, you will see many more designers using X (thank God).

I say "Who Gives A F@#$!!!... The more options the better...

I agree with the previous poster about Quark 4.11 is a ROCK.

Quark 4.0 sucked so much, that I have never switched to Quark 5 yet.

How is Quark 5 compared to Quark 4.11? Are you worried about Quark 6.0 being buggy as h*ll?

    Surprise, surprise...

And expect it to have AT LEAST ONE MAJOR BUG that makes it unusable for the masses.

    So start using InDesign

from here and keep Quark 4.11 around for your old files.

InDesign out sold Quark last year. I would bet even money that it will still outsell quark 6.

$1000 is a steep price tag for Quark 6.

    Why wait?

On OSX Quark 6 is bound to be as daunting an experience per learning curve as InDesign would be for anyone switching from Q4.11., which I used until I switched to OSX. So why did everybody wait for a manufacturer who obviously never gave a c*** about the inconvenience they caused for Quark users by pretending OSX didn't exist until they were ready? It's like saying Quark will be exactly the same only it'll work in OSX. Don't think so. I switched to InDesign and never looked back. It works perfectly on large documents, ads, whatever. Service bureaus have no problem and neither does the international community. Makes great PDFs. I don't get the logic. Why isn't this about productivity, streamlining workflow, and rewarding a company that could see OSX coming?

    Re: Adam Yellin: NEXT WK

If everyone would calm down, relax a little. One the folks you spoke to are misinformed, and tuesdays announcement is on par for next week. Apple didn't jump the gun, sadly Quark's customer service department are reading from a script that was approved for Q6 till it was finally shipping. Crossing desks in Colorado to communicate must take more air then one thought! :)

Quark needs to read there own press releases:
    http://www.quark.com/about/presscenter/releases.jsp

Quark Announces QuarkXPress 6 for Mac OS X
CUPERTINO, CA - June 10, 2003 - At a briefing on the Apple campus today, Quark Inc. announced that QuarkXPress 6 for Mac OS X, the latest upgrade to the world's most widely used page layout software, will ship next week. QuarkXPress 6 gives designers and publishers enhanced tools for creating content for almost any media and the flexibility to thrive in a constantly evolving technology environment.

    InDesign 3 comes out when

Frankly Quark needs to learn that they are a piece of c*** software, and developing on WINDOWS then porting to MAC is not a solid business plan... also the price of Quark 6 is a joke.
