The difference is that Apple actually fixes all the security issues they know about quickly. With MS, wait for a month, and you may have a particular fix if you are lucky.

In addition these fixes are ones to open source applications that are constantly updated to improve reliability and security. I commend Apple for keeping up with the updates instead of doing security through obscurity.

Os X server problem

I installed this fix and now when I go to the network control panel I get an error or a found new ethernet port 0. I made the mistake of turning it on and it cause my machine to lock up and loose ethernet usage. I had to reinstall to 10.2.5.

Anyone else have this problem?

I had the problem too. This is getting old.

I hate Windows because of hassles not on the Mac, but that's changing. The Mac is now officially as bad as my Windows PC at work.

Mail settings lost

Security patch run. On restart Mail says there are no accounts set up. I can see them in the Users/Geoff/Library/Mail folder but Mail obviously can't.

I know I can re-set up the accounts and drag and drop the old mail into the new mailboxes, but is there a clever way of kickstarting Mail to use the previous settings?

And why did a security update fiddle with Mail's memory?

No problems here

Installed on iBook. Mail works fine. No strange networking problems.

As for mail, maybe run repair of permissions on the drive.

Cant Login

After installing the security update, after restart i, or any other user, can't log in anymore. The system doesn't recognise the passwords..

I wil try to reset the Administrator pass by starting up from the installation CD. Hope it worx.

I installed these patch, and i have no problems, and my old "frozen-like" system pausing problem is gone :))))

Can't Login Either

My friend who would have posted this themself can no longer log in after installing the update. Passwords no longer work. Tried the reset password option by booting from CD and still no luck. Strangely, can still access the machine from other computers on the network using the normal user names and password... but just can't get in from the Login Screen. Not a helpful secruity update really.

Actually my dad can't. I had him try and reset his PW via his 10.2 CD with no luck. If anyone figures out a work around for this problem, please e-mail me at applejedi@mac.com

I could not log in. ( See previous post ) When i came home i tried to start from the osx 10.2 cd but was to slow. The system started and gues what.. I could login.. no problem. Don't know what i did to solve the problem but change the cd in the cd player..

I installed the update and restarted and I get a weird box on the middle of my screen with numbers and japanese characters every time I boot - is this the kernel panic?

I have no hardware connected to my Mac except what came with it out of the box - dual G4 1.42 Ghz, 1 gig RAM, nVidia GeForce 4MX.

Is there something like XP's System Restore in OS X so I can revert back to before I installed something?

I can boot from the OS X Jaguar CD, but I don't want to reinstall the OS.

Login Problem Solved

Turns out that there is a really simply work around for the login problem. If you use the return key instead of clicking on the login button, it works fine.

Yeah, OS X is much better than Windows XP. At least Windows XP lets you go back to your previous system easily with System Restore.

System restore? Now that's funny. The only thing that's good for is if you notice immediately there's a problem, and you haven't installed or done anything since then. Beyond that, it screws up your registry and you have to redo anything you might have done since then.

And all that's only if you actually put your faith that a Microsoft feature actually works like they say it will.

You have no f****** clue, obviously. System Restore lets you save multiple restore points, you f****** idiot. You go back to any restore point you want at any time, you f****** moron. It's a great feature that OS X deparately needs. If OS X had this feature, we wouldn't have these posts about people getting their system hosed by an OS X update.
