Apple iSync 1.1 expands phone support

Apple today released , an update to its synchronization software that lets users automatically sync their contacts and calendars on their Mac with those on their cell phones, Palm OS devices and iPods. iSync 1.1 adds support for over 20 mobile phones from Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and Siemens, as well as Mac-to-Mac synchronization of Safari bookmarks for .Mac subscribers. Version 1.1 has added syncing via USB for several Motorola phones. In addition to Safari bookmark syncing, .Mac members can now access and organize their favorite websites from any Mac and with the ability to sync Mac OS X Address Book contacts, Mac.com email, iCal calendar events and To Do lists.

Nokia 3650

Syncing contacts works fine but calender does not. Web site says 'coming soon'. More waiting. Argh! Good to see some initial support though. Thanks Apple.

old ipod support?

I'm at work on my windoze box but something on the isync requirements page says that 'synching with an ipod requires v. 2.0 of the ipod software' or something like that... say it ain't so! my old ipod synced just fine, i really hope apple didn't break it with this update...

or maybe now it's time to buy one of those ludicrous phones & a new ipod ;)

you need ver 1.0.2

You need version 1.0.2 to use this upgrade. I am still on Version 1.0. As a result I can't get the update to show up in my upgrade software panel. Also, the stand alone updater won't work. I can't find the iSync 1.0.2 updrade anywhere. Does anyone have or know where I can get the 1.0.2 updgrade?

This is on apple's web site but there's no information on how to access them on line. (Yes I have a .Mac account) does anyone have an idea how ?

you need 1.0.2 of the calendar to install this, it doesn't matter what version of iSync you have. It wasn't showing in my software update either, but I downloaded it just fine from apple.com/isync

Where the heck

is syncing with Palm categories? Putting categories into differing iCal calendars? iSync is still useless to me without that feature. I'm not going to keep manually putting appoints back in the right categories.

Palm synchronization

I'ved updated to iSync 1.1 and the new version does not recognize my Palm device. When I check the conduit settings in Palm Desktop App, iSync is still enabled. Anybody have ideas on how to fix this?

Now this iSync update requires iCal 1.0.2 which I have installed, and still doesn't show up in Software Update. Above all, now I'm getting the QuickTime update *and* a Bluetooth update "recomended" for iSync 1.1 through SU, which hasn't been mentioned anywhere! How do you like that?!

When upgrading from iSync 1.0 to 1.1 and using a Palm, you need to reinstall the iSync Palm conduit even if you installed it previously for 1.0. There is a new version. You can get it at the very bottom of the iSync download page at

Bookmark Sync - COOL

Have not tried it yet, but syncing my booksmarks would be cool!!!!!!

Would be cool if I could access my bookmarks online via my .mac account just like I do my address book while I am on the road.

Palm warning

Anyone with a Palm should wait until Apple fixes this. As posted above upgrading breaks your Palm/iSync synchornizing. There's a thread with already 5 posts in Apple's iSync discussion board.

If anyone has gotten Palm/iSync 1.1 to work please let the rest of us know

Wont sync Motorola T720

Just downloaded iSync 1.1. It wont add my phone, which it says is supported. My phone does show up in the Network System settings. Anyone get theirs to work?

P800 - NO GO!

Ok, I have a SE P800 and am still waiting for Apple to make a) bluetooth really work, b) iSync to work.

Even after this update bluetooth is still quirky to say the least: connections a hard to make and still the address pops up with an "unknown" when someone calls. Sending SMS or dialing or anthing else still does not work! When do those Apple guys fix that!

This is getting more and more annoying!

Free Software

To everyone complaining to Apple that iSync doesn't work 100% correctly: Its not like they are asking you to pay for this software. Its free, and any mistakes or shortcomings in a release I am sure aren't intentional. This is what happens when Apple tries to support third-party devices in-house. (Thank god they don't license their OS.) There are far too many variables out there to be supprted perfectly for any one company. And I haven't met anyone who bought a mac for the specific reason of using iSync. If it works for you, great. If not, oh well. Hopefully the next version will be better. I can understand being a little upset and disappointed, and it should be known to the people what works and what doesn't, but some people take it a little too personally.

iSync 1.1 and iSync_Palm

I just got my Tungsten to sync with iCal using the new palm conduit. Installed iSync 1.1 then iSyncPalm 1.1

As previously posted, the download on the apple site

has a link to an older version of the conduit. You can tell the difference as it is 606kb while the newer one is 754kb.

The name of the downloaded file is also different
iSyncPalm (1.0)
iSync_Palm (1.1)

The main iSync download page has the correct link to the file.

You can buy the USB cable

Seperately, both from motorola (look very carefully on their site, and from third parties for a lot cheaper. Ebay has thousands (well hundreds anyways) from around 2.50 to 35 dollars. Just get the USB Data cable for V60(x) were x is the letter designation. I have a V60t and will order one off ebay (in the 3-8 dollar range). Now I will be able to have all of my numbers anywhere I am. Yay.

P800 problems too, but...

...I'm not ready to blame Apple. Yet.

What version of Bluetooth in the P800 are you users on? (To find out, do this: Go to Applications (4 dots), menu: View, then System Information. When the System Infomation panel is open, click the arrow (go to the second page).

My Bluetooth verison is CXC12529 R5A

It's been updated TWICE in the past 2 months (once at CeBIT and once recently in the mass update). SE has really messed-up the Bluetooth implementation so that the Auto mode doesn't work with headsets (and possibly the Mac, when the phone rings for example). It only supports the most basic OBEX Push for Bluetooth.

We might either have a workaround from Apple, or a new revision for compliance from SonyEricsson, coming soon.

You suck Apple!

I have to pay $99 a year to sync two Macs in the same room?!!! That''s complete BS. Apple is now requiring a subscription to use their software. I don't have to use their stupid servers if I want to do a simple thing like sync my PowerBook and desktop G4's Safari bookmarks.

Apple blew it on .Mac and didn't get nearly as many subscribers as they wanted, so now they are forcing people to pay them $99 a year to use software that is completely unrelated to Web services.

When am I going to have to have .Mac to use the calculator, or QuickTime...

What's even worse is Apple knows people don't like the subscription model. They are making such a fuss about how Apple Music Store doesn't require a subscription, right? They made a very big deal about that, yet they are forcing Mac users to pay them $99 a year for basic things like syncing, which should be included in the OS. And .Mac sucks! There are nothing but complaints on the quality of the service.

Apple sucks a**. There's a shareware app for syncing Safari bookmarks, but it got broken by Safari Beta 2. Apple is just like Microsoft, folks.

So my iSync and P800 don't work either. I have v CXC12529 R2C of bluetooth on the phone. Is R2C>R5A ? The phone was purchased a few weeks ago direct from se so I'm pretty dissapointed it just doesn't work. No problems with my btooth headset though.

Nokia 3650 refuses to Syn

OK, I've updated both Bluetooth and iSync, then deleted all devices, entered the phone from scratch, and I still can't get iSync to sync up my Address Book and my Nokia 3650 ohone. This is the error message I get:

huh? man... u need to, like, get a life. If Apple was forcing you to pay 99$ to Sync a bookmark file... then why are there other options? This is hardly 'forcing' anyone. It would seem as though they are not forcing you to do anything. Besides, I would think 'sync' means that they are synced... not just merely copied from one computer to another - but I haven't tried it, so i could be wrong. Additionaly, its not like your are paying 99$ to *only* sync your bookmarks, they do offer other services which you may or may not find useful - I'm guessing that you do not.

Make sure you are running Mac OS X v10.2.6 and that you have installed the Bluetooth 1.2.1 Update (check software update).

Make sure that you have already paired you phone with your computer, and finally set them up to connect without authentication all the time.

It works for my 3650 right off the bat, I made everything was setup right first.

The .Mac service is far more than a syncing service. And it is far from being a must have. There are many viable solutions for syning bookmarks and moving data back and forth between your Macs.

Now call a substance abuse hotline or a psychologist and get some help. Then go to Macupdate.com or Versiontracker.com and see the plethora, that's right, I said plethora, of alternatives you have.

To sync my two Macs with iSync, I have to pay $99 a year and get .Mac - period. iSync requires .Mac - period. I don't need email, I already have it with my ISP. I don't need FTP space, I already have it with my Web hosting service. Viruses? LOL. Homepage? LOL

I don't need that c***, so I resent having to get .Mac to sync up two Macs in the same f****** room.

How dare they leverage .Mac in some of their products?!? If I pay $99 for .Mac, I want to make damn sure that it doesn't use/tie in/work with any other Apple software. I was already pissed that I can mount my iDisk in the Finder. Now I can use it with iSync too? Why can't they just make .Mac completely cut off from the rest of the OS?

This sucks. Who do they think they are?!?

Mac OS X comes with rsync. It's free. Use it over ssh to sync your bookmarks. If you're too scared of Terminal to do that, then maybe you need to pay for .Mac.

I agree that these idiots don't have a clue.

If you are a sucker that subscribed to .Mac, you should be whacked in the head. The point is there is now software that has nothing to do with the Internet, like stupid iDisk and stupid Home Page, and it requires you have a subscription account.

So we will see iPhoto requiring a .Mac account, iMovie, and even calculator. Why not? If I need .Mac to sync two computers on a LAN, why not .Mac for Address Book or Mail?

I also agree that if Microsoft was doing this, these Mac users would be having fits.

You pay for Mac hardware. You pay for OS X, every single year with updates. You shouldn't have to pay a yearly subscription to use software like .Mac.

Apple even said their research shows people don't want to subscribe to a service for music. Why do they think we do for regular software?

But the suckers are happy because it gives them more legitimacy for being so stupid to subscribe to .Mac. Suckers.

How quickly we forget...

...Stevo has pulled a .net on us all - 'You pay for OS X, every single year with updates.'

Well we never USED to do that - and I still say it is late beta OS & mt tech confirms that whereas he used to get 75% of calls for windoze he now gets 75% for OS-X & has switched his home machine to a PC from a MAC...

I just wasted the better part of a day getting my printing/networking reconfigured & I can tell you it sure as h*** wasn't 'intuitive' nor easy - I am seriously thinking of going back to 9 'cause it's faster & things work...

the vanishing update

iSync 1.1 update installed here and not only is the app still version 1.0, but v1.1 doesn't show up in the log as installed; nor is it available anymore in the Software Update pref pane.

WTF people. Are you all high?! Is this the Microsoft employee's gripe section and no one told me? I would think that you are all standing around burning Mac computers chanting Bill Gates' name! With these kind of bone head remarks, like "Apple Sucks", does nothing but make us look like a real bunch of idiots who don't like our computers, like we made some collossal mistake or something buying a mac. I for one am TOTALLY happy with my 3 macs (PB G4 400, iMac Flatpanel SuperDrive, iMac DV Grape 400) and how the just work and never break down. I'm running OSX (10.2.6) on all of them along with a .Mac account which I find VERY useful. I also have a T68i that I sync with iSync via bluetooth. It works perfectly. Even before this update, and it still works AFTER the update too. You sound like a whiney children that did not get their dessert. Please grow up. If you don't like it use windows, and when your sick of all the spy-ware. Unlimited pop-up ads, even when your not surfing the web, and constant crashes and conflicts then you may have SOME appreciation for the absolutly outstanding system that Apple has built.

What the heck makes you so special that Apple should continue to give you free things that cost them money to produce and maintain?

BTW, no they don't make you subscribe for Music because once you've bought the song, you've paid your share of the cost to produce and distribute it. It doesn't cost them any more if you play the song more than once like it costs to maintain .Mac.

Who is paying to produce a Sync utility? Apple has to strike a balance between what they take out of general revenue (i.e. all Mac customers pay for) and what they have to explicitly charge for.

There are more people that own just one mac and a cell phone, pda, etc. so that functionality is free. People who can afford two Macs are fewer, hence they should pay for the extra functionality that only serves them. Besides, if you can afford two Macs, you can afford .Mac. I'm sure all those who have scraped together just enough to buy a low-end eMac don't want the price increased another $20 so you can sync your Dual-G4 to your PowerBook for free. Stop being so selfish!

Apple is starting to require .Mac more and more if you want the new features that go with upgrades to various apps.

What I find annoying about that is the bait and switch scenarios. Apple makes just enough stuff free to get us hooked into it, then tries to get us to buy .Mac if we want the features for the upgrades. I would rather Apple just charge a flat rate for all of it's apps/services and a modest upgrade fee upon upgrades. The way the model is now, you think you're getting something for free, but really you're going to end up paying for it, because it will eventually require .Mac in order to function. Which IS exactly the same as Microsoft's subscription strategy.

If you are a sucker that subscribed to .Mac, you should be whacked in the head. The point is there is now software that has nothing to do with the Internet, like stupid iDisk and stupid Home Page, and it requires you have a subscription account.

Are you trying to say iDisk and Home Page have nothing to do with the internet? Or are you just showing your poor writing skills and trying to say iSync has nothing to do with the internet? Hard to say. Esp. since iSync doesn't require an internet account.

So we will see iPhoto requiring a .Mac account, iMovie, and even calculator. Why not? If I need .Mac to sync two computers on a LAN, why not .Mac for Address Book or Mail?

iSync doesn't sync two computers. Its syncs data between a computer and a server, or a computer to peripherals, like phones or PDAs. You can't sync two computers. Now, you can sync one computer to .Mac, then sync the second computer to .Mac, and in theory some small pieces are synchronized (what? calendar, address book, safari bookmarks, that's about it, nothing else, no other files). But even if Apple didn't tie it to .Mac, you'd still need a server. You'd be complaining about that.

I also agree that if Microsoft was doing this, these Mac users would be having fits.

But since MS doesn't have any syncing software, for free, in their OS, its kind of a moot point.

You pay for Mac hardware. You pay for OS X, every single year with updates. You shouldn't have to pay a yearly subscription to use software like .Mac.

No, you pay for Mac hardware. You pay for OS X when you feel an upgrade is worth shelling out money for (just like you do with any other OS or app on the planet - you know there's still people running Windows 95, 98, etc, they don't upgrade just because MS puts out a new version, why do you feel the need to, and then complain about it).

Same with .Mac. You don't have to pay anything. There's so little in OS X and all its free apps (yes, free apps , updated for free, not just updated for free when part of an OS update). Syncing two macs. Some iPhoto web page thing. What else? Beats me, that's all I can come up with.

Its amazing when Apple doesn't give every customer everything they want, for free, they just complain and complain and complain.

Apple even said their research shows people don't want to subscribe to a service for music. Why do they think we do for regular software?

They don't. I don't. And I'm not paying a subscription for anything I know of. Why are you?

But the suckers are happy because it gives them more legitimacy for being so stupid to subscribe to .Mac. Suckers.

Ah, yeah, that's the way its supposed to work. Its called a good business model. The fact that Apple gives away so much consumer software for free now is only so they can "bait" people in to buying their machines and other software. Once you buy your mac, and find out how useful it really is, you want to extend it to every possible limit. Hence .Mac. Sure there is a fee, but it keeps you and Apple going. Apple can't keep taking the hit on production without trying to recoup the costs somehow.

In the first eight months alone, .Mac has given us well over $100 worth of third-party software. Even if you don't need all of the stuff they have offered, most likely at least one piece has been useful, and that's only on top of the subscription services. And its not like you have to buy a new mac every 3 years like a PC because it craps out or the system requirements have increased ten-fold.

What the h***?

Who are the idiots whining about not being able to sync two computers? Reading the above post, he makes a point. This is what iSync synchronizes:
- Address Book contacts
- Safari bookmarks
- iCal schedule and to-do items

That's it. Nothing more. If you got two macs, like I do, how the h*** is this helpful???? I want to sync my quicken account files (or at least get the latest file moved to my other mac), sync my Office documents that might be worked on here or there, sync my music files, sync my IE and Mozilla bookmarks, sync my preferences to most of my apps. h***, sync my saved games for whatever I'm playing now.

If iSync worked between two macs, you'd be whining about what it doesn't sync. Here's an idea. Spend $50-$100 on a specialized file syncing software that syncs all the files you have, not just two or three. Software from a company that specializes in this stuff and, as such, know what users need/want. Software from a company that's bound to update bugs and add more features in a shorter amount of time than it takes Apple to come out with a 1.1 version (what, 8 months, for this?).

Or follow the directions of another post, and trick iSync into working with another server. Or write your own package.

Maybe what you people need is one of those self-improvement/self-empowerment classes held at your local Holday Inn. You know, the kind that will teach you how to be less reliant on having other people doing everything for you, and lets you actually go out and think and do for yourselves. Because you apparently have some type of deep-seated belief that, because you bought an Apple computer, Apple owes you by supplying you with whatever software and functionality you need, free of charge.

Can somebody who has a Palm comment on whether the upgraded iSync is any faster than it was before. Frankly, I found the earlier version to be painfully slow.

palm works again

could also not sync my palm after updating to isync 1.1. after installing palm desktop 4.1 (for free on the palm homepage) and reinstalling isync 1.1, the palm synchronization worked again. but it took me about 2 hours to find out!! apple should be more careful before releasing such updates.

and still only a few nokias that sync, annoying!

P800 HELP for iSync

Hello... I just got a P800, and it works just fine with my iBook. I can sync all my contacts, but I had a problem with my iCal.

According to Apple, the processor of the P800 by Sony-Ericsson cannot sync with iCal, with iSync 1.1. It is, as they say: "Coming soon." However, you can modify the value of the "kNSSyncDeviceUseCalendars" from "false" to "true" in the file "Library/Application Support/SyncService/501/SymbianConduitDefaults.plist" and you will be able to sync. your iCal.

WARNING: This little change can work or cannot work, depending on your machine. Try it, and if it does not work, change the value of the file back to its original form.

PS: For those how wonder how to change the value of the file. Open the file with TextEdit.

try firewall OFFwhilesync

At first, isync worked correctly for my address book under os x 10.2.6

Then a couple of weeks later, it wouldn't work. The error message in the log was " Could not establish connection to Nokia3650
Can't synchronize contacts to Nokia3650: device is not available"

I finally tried turning OFF the firewall (in the "sharing" item of preferences, although for safety I first turned off my airport to isolate my computer from the internet.) Now it works again for address book syncing! Yay!
