Apple Canada cuts laptop prices even further
updated 01:20 pm EDT, Mon June 2, 2003
MacNN reader Frank Rezny notes that has dropped the prices on the 17" PowerBook as well as the other laptop products, including the iBook line. In some cases, the price drops are larger than the up to $300 price drops noted at the Apple Store US this morning The largest prices drops are on the 15" Titanium PowerBooks followed by a significant price cut on the 17" PowerBook.
All prices below are noted in Canadian dollars (CAD; with 1 CAD = 0.732 USD).
- The PowerBook 17" is $4699 (was $5299)
- The PowerBook 12" Combo drive is $2249 (was about $2700)
- PowerBook 12" SuperDrive is now $2549 (was about $2900)
- PowerBook 15" Combo drive is now $2849 (was about $3700)
- PowerBook 15" SuperDrive now $3699 (was about $4500)
- iBook 12" CD is $1429 (was about 1550)
- iBook 12" Combo is $1849 (was about 2000)
- iBook 14" Combo is $2149 (was about 2300)

Well our dollar has gone up a little recently.
Perhaps that's the reason for the larger price cut?
No our dollar is c*** instead of absolute c***.
It's a start I guess

USD is falling

The same thing is true for European stores. It seems Apple is ajusting some prices to take into account the huge downfall of the US currency.
But anyway, Apple is still taking a very confortable margin on exchange rate here in Europe.....

Speed Bump at Macworld
06/02, 01:36pm reply
I believe there will be a moderate speed jump at Macworld. I would expect the 12" machines to go to 1GHz. The 15" machines will probably be completely redone with faster processors, Bluetooth, AirPort Extreme, new cases, and backlit keyboards with a maximum speed of 1.25GHz. The 17" will be speed-bumped to 1.25GHz or even 1.4GHz.
Desktops will probably go to 1.8GHz or 2.0GHz at the expo or shortly thereafter.
Just a guess!

Huge downfall of the US Economy?
What plaent are you on? Planet Euro?
A lower dollar is actually a GOOD thing for businesses as it lowers prices.
Our economy had a few months of negative growth, a very long time ago. Our economy grew at a pace the same or greater than many Euroo countries and our unemployment rates are LOWER than many Euro countries.
If Germany had our economy they'd be dancing in the streets.
Just heard today manufacturing surged unexpectedly. Sounds like companies are producing more (cheaper prices tend to make people buy stuff).
So if Apple's laptops are cheaper maybe more people will buy them. Which means more unit sales and roughly the same profit margins on the same or slightly lower gross revenues.
Would you rather have Apple making a lot of money on not that many unit sales (fewer new/repeat customers) or have more units sold which require more goods/services to be used on the new laptop?
Any way you slice it we are doing just fine in the US.

As of yesterday, the 12" PowerBook was $2879 (all prices in Canadian funds) at the Apple Store. Today it's $2249! Taking that one step further...
My university WAS selling it for $2390 -- I can now buy one from 'em for $1992. Taxes and shipping included for under $2300.

Expo?
06/02, 01:53pm reply
I don't think we will see much at the Expo in July. I think we will see things more at WWDC instead...just think: Steve walks on stage. "I'm here to show you 10.3...on this: out rolls the little platform with the new IBM 970 based systems, a new enclosure, USB 2.0, faster RAM, faster system bus. Shipping today." That's when we will see new stuff. Remember how upset Steve is with IDG??? He will introduce the good stuff right beforehand, just to piss them off.

$CDN
06/02, 01:55pm reply
It is the $CDN. Several people here e-mailed Apple Canada and they actually responded to e-mails. Lowering the price now looks like a summer special but they can lower it $300 and still make more profit than they could have at Christmas. The $CDN has gone up so much so quickly that $10,000 U.S. is now only worth $9000 if you're shopping in Canada. But let's just wait for the SARS and Mad Cow economic figures and we'll see it all go back down.
