Reader notes flaw in some iPod belt clips
updated 02:10 pm EDT, Sun June 1, 2003
MacNN reader Sam Elkholy writes about a defect with some of the first iPod case belt clips, which he says has been acknowledged by Apple:
"I bought a carrying case from Apple about 3 - 4 months ago. I was out on my balcony the other day, with my iPod in my carrying case strapped to my belt buckle. The plastic part that hooks the carrying case to my belt buckle broke and my iPod fell 1 story and on to our concrete patio.
"I went downstairs fully expecting my iPod to be shattered and in pieces. It was intact and still in the carrying case, without a scratch , and still playing the same song! the carrying case I think had a lot to do with saving my iPod. I called Apple to tell them about this, and they said they were aware of the problem with the first few carrying cases that shipped. I wonder why they did not bother telling anyone."

Me too!

That has happened to both of the Apple carrying cases I have had. It fell onto a tiled floor the first time (didn't break but big dent in the clear plastic at the base of the ipod - kept playing the song though!). The other time was on a plane where I was about to disembark when off it came onto the floor.

This happened to my friend and me...within a week of each other. I got mine in July of last year and he got his about a month ago. My clip broke clean off. The only difference between my friend's clip breaking and mine breaking is that there were more little plastic things connecting the clip. His had 8 and mine had 6. I guess that is the difference between the "weak" case and the "strong" one. ;) Do you think apple will replace mine? I guess I might as well try...Did this guy have any luck?

Replacement on the way

Mine broke a while ago when getting into a car. A replacement is on the way from Apple.

I know somwone who got a new iPod, unpacked it and went to clip the case and pod to their belt and the clip just broke off. Right out of the box!

did you have to pay?

So my question is - Did Apple make you pay for a replacement iPod case? My belt clip just broke off three days ago. I called the Apple Store near me, and the staff member I spoke to said I could not have my case replaced under the terms of my warranty. I'm hoping he was incorrect.

So?

So are they gonna make new ones? And give us poor saps new ones? For free or with a discount?
They should, I mean they make something like that and when the iPod breaks due to the broken belt clip, they will do nothing? That is and odd way of dealing with a problem...
Don't expect me to buy an iPod anymore...

Don't use the clip

One of the nicest features of the iPod, which is even better with the new models, is how tiny it is, so it's very easy to hide it snugly in a jacket or pants pocket.
The case is too flimsy anyway, besides it's not a very bright idea to flaunt a $500 piece of electronics.

Mine failed also

The clip on my iPod case (the one that came in the box with the old version of the iPod 10gb) failed after about 1 week. A look at the design revealed that the hinge on which the clip pivots is held in place by two extremely fragile bits of plastic. Not a good design. Since I decided I couldn't trust the case to protect the iPod anyway, I purchased a 3rd party case and am relatively happy with it.

anyone who wears their ipod on a belt clip is a f**.
1000 songs in your pocket you idiot, not 1000 songs clipped to your belt like a nancy-boy.
