Apple notebook sales growth outpace industry

updated 04:30 pm EDT, Mon May 19, 2003

Macworld UK reports that Apple's in the first quarter 2003, growing 18% in both the commercial and consumer sectors: "Apple's UK notebook market share climbed from 2.8 per cent to 3.4 per cent year-on-year. In total across all vendors, notebook sales grew 14.7 per cent year-on-year, so Apple's growth in that market exceeded industry averages."

May be it's just because we don't have nothing else to take. PowerMac obviously lack in power and price competitivity and on the other hand, iMac and eMac seem to attrack a lot less than the previous fruty models. We really need 970 desperately especially in the desktop market.

All this means is the brits like the 12" and 17" models better than the dell c***. Surprise surprise. Now if Apple could do that across the board with the Powermacs, iMacs and iBooks, it would be impressive.

I must sell all my shares now! Apple's going bankrupt... This is a clear indicator!!! Call MSNBC and The National Post!

They can write /another/ "insightful" story on Apple's twenty-six-year-history of going under.

(Sorry, I couldn't resist.)

If Apple's sales growth exceeded general market growth, doesn't that mean Apple actually took marketshare.

Where are the Microsoft trolls when you need to rub their faces in it?

Yeah but I'll bet desktop sales dropped by the same percentage if not more!

Marketshare

05/20, 09:04am reply

Marketshare is such a misleading statistic.

They are basing marketshare solely on sales figures and ignoring the actual install base.

When they say that Apple's marketshare has dropped to 2.5% for that quarter then that mens that out of every 200 computers sold that quarter, 5 were Macs. They fail to indicate how many of the other 195 were Windows or how many were Linux. They do not mention how many were Dell, how many were IBM, how many were Sony, how many were HP/Compaq, how many were some brand we have never heard of, etc. Also out of all of the non-Mac computers sold, how many were purchased to replace PCs that are being thrown away? How many Mac buyers are replacing an older Mac and how many are replacing a PC? Are the older Macs beibg thrown away at the same rate that older PCs are?
