Ars Technica looks at PowerPC 970 processor

Ars Technica has posted a second part of its , IBM's upcoming 64-bit Power4 derivative desktop chip, which is rumored to be used in future Apple desktops: "I believe that Apple is poised for a huge overhaul of its hardware line based on this processor and a renewed relationship with IBM. I'm finally convinced that Apple's days of wandering in the wilderness with Motorola are over, and that personal computer users will be able to see the Mac as a real option again in terms of desktop, and not just portable, performance."

    But...

Who knows when (or even IF) these processors will be used by Apple. Apple should just step up to a microphone and say "We're going to use it, and this is when...". I mean, it can't hurt sales of their current crop of c***, as no one's buying those anyway. Everyone's just waiting, hoping, etc. At least if apple said something, it would be waiting, knowing.

But of course, it don't matter. By the time they come out at 1.8GHZ, the Intel folks will probably be at 4 GHz, and that's all that matters to most users.

    business

Obviously Apple won't say when or if they're even using the processors. Come on. That common sense to anyone in business. The high end desktops they have out now are great. Could they be faster? Sure. But they'll always be the next thing that's faster and better... that's computers. At some point, you just have decide to buy and stop waiting.

On rumors, it's not even Apple's job to respond to all the rumors that come out. People continue to disappointed by Apple only because Apple can't seem to reach some people's lofty expectations - only made worse by rumors of machines and devices that don't exist. Not to mention that when they come out with something, say for example the new iPod, people are upset it doesn't have something like a color screen or something. Apple never said it was going to. Rumor cites did.

Rumors are all fun and games, but they can seriously hurt business.

As for me, I'm going to go have fun with my iWalk...er, um. Nevermind.

    ok troll

    > no one's buying those anyway.

They are selling 10's of thousands. Yes that number is down significantly. Announcing too early would send sales down to 0 resulting in a loss for the quarter.

    >4 ghz.
    A) they won't be
    b) if you don't believe the mhz myth from apple then believe it from intel for their centrino and itanium.care to explain that dorkus?
    c) cost wise apple will be selling machines with 2 970s in them at a lower cost then intel selling dual xeons

    apple wins.

you on the other hand need to go back to

    Non-Announcements...

This is why Apple doesn't make way-ahead-of-time product announcements (and yes, this refers to the Osborne Portable computer from 1981):

Two years after the Osborne débuted in the marketplace, the company was bankrupt! Why? Osborne made a fatal mistake! They failed to plan! To make matters worse, they announced a second machine, the Osborne 2, which was supposed to be a great improvement over the initial Osborne and all of its competition. However, the announcement was premature since the Osborne 2 was not ready for customer shipments. As a result, the sales for the original Osborne dried up while their customers waited for the Osborne 2. Consequently, the company had no sales, and that translated to no revenue and subsequently to no cash. Meanwhile, the market was waiting for the new and improved Osborne 2 that never materialized because the company ran out of money, and went bankrupt. The company failed in large part to a lack of honest and intensive business planning. In summary, by failing to plan, it planned to fail and was found guilty of "eating its own children."

    970 better?

The ONLY way that people will believe that a 1.8GHz 970 is faster than a 4+GHz P4 and forget about MHz is if the 970 beats the pants off the p4 in ALL benchmarks, real or artificial, in EVERY software package, AND in slower macs. If the fastest 970 comes close to the P4 it won't be enough.

Now, if Apple sells a dual 970 or a quad 970 for the same price as a single 4+GHz p4, then maybe we'll have some bragging rights.

How about a 970 based iMac and all Dual or Quad 970 based Powermacs? Wouldn't that be impressive?

    try this on for size

The ONLY way that people will believe that a 1GHz Intel Itanium is faster than a 4+GHz P4 and forget about MHz is if the Intel Itanium beats the pants off the p4 in ALL benchmarks, real or artificial, in EVERY software package, AND in slower macs. If the fastest Intel Itanium comes close to the Intel Itanium it won't be enough.

    4GHz P4

won't be here when the 970 comes out. The P4 will be at 3.2 GHz and the 970 will beat it.
