    Gap

I think the gap has to do with the MP3 (or AAC) format. IIRC, a song is split into several frames of fixed length prior to encoding. It is very unlikely that a song of arbitrary length will fill an integer number of frames, hence a silent gap at the end of the piece.

I'd say there's nothing Apple can do about it since it's very likely that the length of a piece is given by the number of frames, and there's therefore no way of distinguishing between 'normal' sinlence at the end of a song and silence added because of the encoding.

    Set stop manually

The not that hard way to fix it would be to set the stop manually in iTunes Get Info dialog.

    What a moron

The reason that there is a gap between the songs on his audio CD is because the preferences under the "Burning" tab are set for 2 second gap between songs, rather than "none."

What a Dumbass (Same goes to MacNN editors for not even bothering to point this out.)

Please reread his post. He said he did that:

Quote "Gaps between all the songs, even though I chose "Gap Between Songs" to be "none" in iTunes > Preferences > Burning"

    nogap

This is a problem with any compressed audio format. The algorithm needs to "look ahead" a few milliseconds, and when you rip and encode on a track-by-track basis, since you're not looking ahead at the next track you get a gap.

This irritates me to no end, it's one of my pet peeves. It is possible to encode without the gap -- go a Google search on "lame --nogap" to find out about how this is supported in the open-source LAME encoder. Documentation on this is kind of sparse, but it works, and I've ripped and encoded all my CD's this way.

The player needs to support smooth nogap playing, also: I use the command-line based mpg123 player. The combination of "lame --nogap" and mpg123 yields MP3 playback that is acceptable to me.

With Apple's enphasis on the User Experience, I'm suprised that they haven't included this in iTunes, especially since there's a reference for them to follow!
