    IP over Firewire

Has Apple done anything to IP over Firewire on regular OS X since it first introduced that beta last year? Does this mean that the regular version of 10.2.5 does not have this enhanced IP over Firewire capability, but the Server version does?

    Unfair!

    Crashes ?

I hope this new update will reduce the number of crashes on OS X Server. Yep, our X-Serve crashes regularly. It's a good thing we can restart it using SSH software and command lines to shut it down before restarting it.

    10.2.5 sucks

I did a reinstall of 10.2.3 this morning, I was getting tired of 10.2.5 and its kernel panics every 2 days. Here's hoping they'll fix this soon, first time I've ever had to downgrade X.

    RE: Crashes?

We also had a flaky XServe, but traced it to bad RAM. Another unit had a bad logic board, which was identified by one of our service techs.

Now, we're completely stable. We replaced two racks of old G3/G4 "servers" on ASIP with 9 XServes on a single rack, and couldn't be happier. This (OS X and XServe) is where Apple should have been all along.

The fact that you can log in via SSH and restart the system shows very clearly that it has NOT actually crashed. You should try other methods to return the system to usability before just telling the system to reboot (like for example kill applications that are acting up or kill the window server/login window).

    XServe crashes/failures

If you are having regular failures, do yourself a favor and run the XServe Hardware Test CD. We were having the same problem, and it turned out that the onboard NIC was faulty... you can actually test this just by switching yuor network cable to the other card.

OS X Server should not crash, really ever. If it is you've probably either installed some software in a bad way (unlikely) or you have some bad hardware, or maybe something in the environment is against you (too hot? XServe likes a cool room).

    XServe shouldn't crash

You're right - the XServe shouldn't crash at all if configured properly. I'm running a video editing lab off of one with multiple workstations - hasn't had a kernal panic since I upgraded to Mac OS X 10.2.x and replaced faulty RAM.
