Wil Shipley of The Omni Group let us know about a 3-day for MacNN readers: "We've been working on OmniGraffle 3.0 for quite a while now, and we're now going to do a fully-open beta for just three days (Saturday, Sunday, and Monday) to catch any show-stoppers that our smaller, closed betas might not have caught...We'll give the first person to report any issue that we consider a "show-stopper" for this release a free license to OmniGraffle 3.0 Professional (a $119 value)." The full release is expected on April 15th.

    This Forum Sucks

I'll be taken Macnn off my favorites like I did with MacAddict. They broke down in terms of not caring about the forums t and I actually managed to disassociate my self with it's website and not visit on a daily basis. It's been more than three months since I visited them.

It's my humble way of encouraging meaningful discussion. The idiot who broke the format above can stay here along with others like him.

    Good Bye

    total BS

So I finally registered on the forum - JUST TO CHIME IN HERE. This marketing garbage is total BEE ESS! BullS!@T!!!

Go ahead, try and open a Visio VSD file (native Visio format doc - 99.95% of the stuff you'll get from someone in Visio is in this format) - nope, can't do it can you. The pro version says:
    -----------------------------------------------------
"OmniGraffle Professional can only open Visio® 2002 XML files.

This file is in Visio's propriatary binary format... please open and resave as an XML drawing.
    ----------------------------------------------------
WHAT THE h***? What good is that. Here I have a disk full of VSD files, these guys go and announce that they'll not only read but write to visio docs. Sure the XML is a visio doc, but does anyone actually save their files this way?

We look bad enough at work using Macs and when a collegaue sends a Visio doc, now I have to deal with this c***?

    Ridiculous.

RE: Total BS? I hope not.

Uh, if our marketing said that we read "Visio" files and didn't say "XML", then please point it out to me and I'll correct it.

The reason that we don't read Visio VSD files, and the reason that NO diagram program in the entire world does, is that the format is private, undocumented, and darn hard to crack. If Microsoft would give us even a clue as to how it's encoded we'd do it.

We're not total idiots -- in fact, we're the guys who cracked the Microsoft PowerPoint 2.0 binary format for Lighthouse Design "way back when". But Visio VSD is really bizarre.

So until we get some help from Microsoft or have more months to investigate, yes, you have to write your files out as XML. It's easy to set the default in Visio be XML: just go to the options menu and use the fourth or fifth tab, and there's an pop-up for your permanent save format.

It's true most existing files are VSD. It's also true that the point of XML is that it's supposed to be a standard interchange format, so I don't think it's unreasonable for people in a heterogeneous environment to save their files in XML. Clearly even Windows users recognize the benefits of XML, otherwise Microsoft would have had absolutely zero reasons to add it to their Widnows-only product.

I think or Visio import and export are faithful beyond any what most people would hope, and they create fully editable documents on both sides. I'd love to support binary and will do so as soon as I get any idea how.

But, if you feel that you were led astray by our marketing and tricked into spending your money on a license, we will gladly refund it.

    Yours,

    Hey Omni geniuses!

You might try doing a google search for Visio converter. First hit shows that ConceptDraw can convert Visio files. Also there's a Visio to XML mass converter, at least put a freakin' link to it!

    RE: Hey Omni geniuses!

    I'm aware of ConceptDraw's converter.

It does not read vsd files itself, although it can convert them. It's a clever little windows program that uses COM (or something like it) to actually launch Visio, have it read in the file, and then step through all the objects in the file and have each one write itself out in ConceptDraw format.

This approach requires the customer to have Windows and Visio to "read" VSD files. And for your machines to be networked.

The company that puts out ConceptDraw also offers a service where you can mail them your vsd files and they'll mail you back a ConceptDraw file that they've created using this process. (Their conversion does seem quite faithful, by the by.)

This isn't quite the same thing as double-clicking on a Visio file and having it open in your application, which is what we offer with Visio XML files.

The Visio to XML mass converter I found at http://www.diagramantics.com/vxdsp/about/VisioToXML/ also is a windows program that loads VSD files into Visio and saves them out again. For the example of a collegaue sending you a file, the mass converter won't help much, but it might indeed be handy for a disk full of VSD files.

I haven't used this mass converter, though, and would feel strange recommending it to customers based on just a google search.

I stand by my assertion that no other diagram programs read Visio VSD.
