Connectix to debut DoubleTalk at MWSF

updated 01:55 pm EST, Fri January 5, 2001

At Macworld Expo next week, Connectix will introduce DoubleTalk, an application that allows Mac users to access Windows networks and printers. Where DoubleTalk differs from competing products, Connectix claims, is with its tight Mac integration (networks are accessed via the Chooser) and ease of use that actually makes it easier to access Windows networks from a Mac than from a PC. Connectix also claims that printing via DoubleTalk will be up to 50% faster than printing to network printers through the Mac OS. A Mac OS X version is not yet planned. The $100 title will ship on Tuesday and will be available at the Expo for the showfloor price of $90.

    two questions...

    1. Will it also offer better Novell support than the current ProSoft client?

    2. will it support OS X?

    Difference from Dave?

So how will this differ from Thursby's DAVE?

    Netware Support?

Will this work with Netware print queues or just Windows networking?

I have a PCL print driver for the Mac that does not work under the new Novell Mac client because they (Prosoft) did away with the Novell print chooser.

Has anyone found any more info on Connectixs' website? I could not.

    Perhaps less clunky than

Perhaps it will be less clunky than DAVE... one can only hope. It is hard enough trying to explain Windows (bass-ackwards) networking concepts to a Mac User...
Maybe Connectix will streamline the same functionality...
    Better than this though?

    Pass/Fail

If its a good product and people need it and buy it, then it will survive. If it sucks and people don't buy it then it will be killed of and Connectix will find something else to do.

If Mac OS X has some sort of Windoze networking support built in by default, stuff like this is moot moving into next year when Mac OS X will *the* OS to use (not just Mac users, but maybe Windoze users unhappy being Microsoft's b****).

Of course since Mac OS X is essentially UNIX deep inside porting UNIX networking software with a Mac-like GUI on top isn't totally out of the question (witness BrickHouse for the UNIXy firewall in OS X).

    The Chooser????

Come on, tell me that this is just a miscaculated feature prediction? It has to work with the Network browser too? DAVE has its own browser.

    Network Browser

according to the advertisement in the latest edition of Macworld, it will support the Network Browser, if I recall correctly.

    Integration

Yes, DoubleTalk will support seamless integration with the Chooser and other network access panels.

    DAVE's not here

My system was the least stable it's ever been when I was evaluating DAVE. Granted, that was a couple of years ago, but I expected better.

When Samba andor NFS options show up in the "Connect to server..." option in Mac OS X, I'll be happy.
