Perhaps the Apple Store Guys jumped the gun and Apple hasn't actually released the update yet.

All OS updates (10.2.1, 10.2.2, 10.2.3, 10.2.4, 10.0.x, 9.2.x, 9.1.x, etc.) have been able to be purchased on CD

mine is feeling snappier already, and I haven't even downloaded it yet...

Does it have like a universal installer? it says 10.2 thru 10.2.4 so does it just have a one installer click and away she goes or do we have to install everything renterning our password and restarting?

It will be a Combined installer. What this means is that no matter what version of 10.2 you are running it will updat your system to 10.2.5.

I have been reading these posts for a long time and I am tired of posters who want something for nothing and when they don't get it right away they whine like children. Because he has a legitimate point. He comes here to read people's leginimate concerns and discussion, just like I do. If there was a "Filter whiny crybabies" checkbox we would click it. But really, grow up. Apple announces something and you immediately run to the Software Update to check if it's there. For goodness sake, let it propagate to their servers before running to MacNN to cry. Go outside, breathe some fresh air, smell a flower, kiss a girl. In other words, get a life! There are more important things than having to download an updater within minutes of its release. Kids on Christmas eve are more patient than you people here.

I actually don't think we will have to pay for the update. It is made more for people with very slow connections. If you look at all the updates since 10.2 came out there are about 500 megs

Tragic indeed. Actually that was one of the things which originally drew me towards the Mac platform... the sense of community that surrounded it. I guess that's one of the negative side effects of becoming a more popular platform though- for every sensible user who's switched there is also a switcher who's negative, incompetent, incoherent, unrealistic, and only bought a Mac because "they look cool".

But seriously, some people freak out over +.1 updates, but that's to be expected. I do get a tingly sensation when downloading a new update. There is always the chance that this update is "THE ONE". The one that updates and corrects every little issue I have, well, every update/correction I have until I receive that update. Then I will have a whole new list of updates and corrections.

I know we all joke about the "debug code", but I feel that many of us (OS 9 users and Windows users etc.) *know* our systems could/should be more responsive. I think we all just want the best of all worlds (The application selection of Windows [and Mac], the amazing hardware design and GUI of OS X and the free / open nature of Linux.

Give the company a break! The update just hasn't been posted yet.

Maybe Apple should go back to charging premium for its computers and software to keep these new "Communities" from getting to the Mac. After all they don't have real affect on the Apple Market anyway.

I think the reason they are saying it will be available on CD is so those of us who want a Bootable version of 10.2.5 can have it. If I have to wipe my system for whatever reason... I would rather just do fresh installs from my 10.2 and 10.2.5 CD's.

I think reference to beta is more about brutal design, like lack of uninstall options (aka 10.1.4), instructions or help files either embedded or online (my most recent quibble) - Windoze has both uninstall & restore options which seem simple, intuitive & just plain superior to any troubleshooting experience I've EVER had with my mac...

Needless to say I was NOT happy about running a stream (in QTBroadcaster) and then having to explain to everyone that the crackling they heard was a flaw in how the OS handles USB audio and that in order to fix it, I would have to disconnect the iMic and reconnect (which crashes QT Broadcaster). I am hoping that they have fixed this two bugs.

Other than these two bugs, OS X is a FINE OS. Fix these, and I will be a happy camper.

What are you smoking? To uninstall in OS X just drop it in the trash. The windows uninstall dreams it was that sophisticated. Its called bundling. The help will get there.

10.2.4 on an iBook 500... been using it since Jan with 10.2 on it, not a single problem thus far. Perhaps The whiners should form a union :P

Ok here's my thought. Why don't we ignore the whiners? My only gripe with OS X is my iSub sometimes doesn't work after you wake the machine up from sleep. That and you should be able to mute the iSub with the mute button on the keyboard.

First, I think some of the loss of community is due to the influx of UNIX sentimentality - that is, if someone knows less than you, try to use so much sarcasm they'll go running back to Windows, or, one in ten, try to learn enough to be able to do it to others. Hazing, I believe it's called.

Second, this level of profanity and ill thought is unacceptable in a public forum such as this. I've had this kind of problem in my own forums now and then, and people have been banned, and the problem has healed itself. I also have volunteers who help to keep things clean. I doubt MacNN is without that kind of resource. If they don't want to run afoul of COPPA, or simply drive away all sensible people to MacRumors and such, they'll stomp down on all the pointlessly disrespectful posters, the curse-happy morons, the ones who can think of no better contribution than insulting the French - who, by the way, I do not blame for their avoidance of war, having seen what it is like first-hand; but I do blame for their tolerance for having synagogues fire-bombed - and Iraq, which is currently not a joking matter. I think leaving a hundred blank lines is also unacceptable. The whole situation calls for an abuse-reporting-and-handling system.

Now you can all curse at me and tell me if I don't like it, I can skip over the posts. But as you know, that's not a real solution, any more than "if you don't like spam you can delete it" is a real solution.

Great! I get PERFECT functionality from InDesign 2.02, Photoshop 7, Illustrator 10, etc. etc. No system crashes, no kernel panics (haven't seen one since Mac OS X beta days). The DVD functionality could be a bit more consistent (I have a Toshiba DVD/CD-RW SD-R1202) - but, that is just junk food for me & not necessary. My system is an old G4 533mhz/133.

I make my living from my Mac - OS X has made living EASY. I tried using os 9.2.2 the other day - :( - what a wretched experience that was. I forgot what it was like limiting my computer to ONE TASK AT A TIME. Never again.

Come on with all these lame sexist, disparaging comments. I just see a lot of angst-ridden teen-agers here. Any computer USERS lurking around?

btw: 10.2.5 is supposed to be "IT" until 10.3. Hmmmmm.

Anyway, you go Apple. My computer, thought it's old, is the fastest system many of my friends have seen/used....that is to say, in just typical usage...e-mail, web browsing, navigating thru files/folders....they're not trying to compare it to a PC running the latest version of Quake - that would be another story. So, if an "old" 533mhz mac running OS X gets that sort of response from PC folks - something must be right, eh?

In summary, I suspect the nay-sayers here probably weren't hugged enough by their parents as children....& are, of course, seeking attention thru negative behavior. How very clever.

To fix the Linksys 54G PC card / AppleAirPortExtreme hack, delete these two files if they exist from the earlier hack:

Then change the $patchloc line to:

Does your Mac also take a long time to boot up? You may have NetInfo binding turned on, open up Directory Access (/Applications/Utilities/), and uncheck NetInfo. You will need an administrator password to do so.

Help! Now that I updated my OS to 10.2.5 I see white thin lines on my Desktop picture... but only on some of my jpgs...

Also when I use Safari and look at photos like wallpapers they too have thin lines in them. But when i open them in Photoshop they are gone...

Wow, i looked to this post to for helpful compatibilty type comments about this OS update and am shocked at the content I see here. Complete nonsense for all but a few.

I make my living on a MAC making music and graphics. I hope I can turn to this forum in the future for a more informative list of comments.

Installed on my new 17" iMac G4 1Ghz and just noticed that when the machine wakes up from a sleep--the display is all screwed up & flashes between white & a bunch of graphic garbage on the desktop... Its unusable until you do a hard reboot!!!!!

I haven't yet installed it on my 17" Powerbook but probably will not until I find more people who've had this problem & or have a solution..

On my way to work...will have to figure this out later...not happy. Is there a way to 'turn back' and uninstall OS 10.2.5???

Apple has always charged for updates when you order it directly from them... the charge is for shipping, handling, materials, etc... If you don't want to pay anything, just take a CD-R to your nearest Apple Dealer and I'm sure they'll be more than happy to burn a copy of the update for you! :)

By the way, Thanks Apple for keeping up the good work and keeping up on the updates.

It took me less than 10 minutes to download and install. I hit install and went into the other room and when i came back it was installed and asking me to restart.

Further discussions with Apple OEM assembly partners have given us up to date information on motherboard production for both PowerBooks and PowerMacs, both using the IBM PPC 970 processor.

First, we have been told, and we have second-sourced the claim that 15.4-inch PowerBook motherboards are now in production and are shipping regularly to Apple's contract PowerBook assembler. Next, we have been told, and we have also second-sourced a claim that bid requests for a fully-designed 970-based board for the 17-inch PowerBook were received by two assembly plants this past Friday, with a submission deadline for replies of April 30th.

Finally, a reliable source in engineering management at the ODM supplier providing the upcoming PowerMac motherboards has informed us that those boards went into volume production this past Friday, and that first shipments to Apple's final assembly partner for the new PowerMacs is to take place "about April 15th."

We will add that our sources seem consistently taken aback by what they all characterize as the unexpected and very unusual hurry involved in all work on these new desktop and portable Apple products. Every step in each process is being scheduled far tighter than is normal for a new production run.

Running the install on my 533mhz G4. Perfect. Start-up time is swift, all applications run (that is to say - full Adobe suite, etc. Sorry folks, I only run Graphic Design-related materials - can't comment on much else) great!

Preview of PDF's is fast (with preview)...but, oddly enough, won't display Gradients made in InDesign? Go figure. Who cares, they display just fine in Acrobat 5.05 and that's what matters to me.

To all the nay-sayers, get off your train, please. Sure, you're bound to have SOME issues if you use 3rd party products (mouse, graphics tablet, what-have-you) - BUT, if you stick with the tried & true (apple-standard mouse, major design app's, etc.) then you will have a rock-solid system.

Get real, i would not pay for an update, especially, when you by an os, you expect it to be finnished.

Not some beta, and then fix up, then fix up, then fix up.

It the os was not good enought, don't release it, or patch it up for free. Im sick of spending hours downloading patches from the net,

Hoping to see some real feedback on 10.2.5 from real users. I skipped 10.2.4 because of initial issues and haven't seen a problem so far. However, I would like to get the latest security patches released for the various *Nix-wide holes that have been made public so far.

As far as those folks complaining about having to download, better be happy you aren't running a Windows system or at least if you are, you don't strike me as the type to keep your system updated because "security updates" from MS come far more frequently...

No, you're not seeing things. The iPhoto widgets are squished together -- just compare the spacing of them with Safari. It's obvious.

You're right, somethings going on with the buttons for iPhoto and iMovie. Noticable difference.

One last comment... I use OS 9.1 every day for design work and hate every minute of the experience. I stayed away from Apple's for that reason for my own personal home use. I bought my first Mac for home because of OS X. I've found it to be leaps and bounds above anything out there. As for needing updates, that's all part of computers and operating systems. It's impossible for programmers and designers to predict every problem that will occur once a product is used by millions of users. For anyone complaining about OS X not being "finished", it could be worse.... you could be running Windows.

ok ok, i was lost here after posting my curse laden complaint about mail's signature stuff. BUT, its been 3 years now and this isnt fixed. this is a big problem. and yes, go into the applecare forums and raise h*** about this and any other longstanding concerns.

as far as this beta OS nonsesne, i applaud apple for releasing timely bug squashes and updates. without them we would have a microsoft sort of life, did a security vulenrability get covered up (as MS tends to do). 10.1 was a complete OS and 10.2 was even more so, you will not see the fluidity, ease of use, and interface consistency in Windows or linux. i should know, i dual boot into gentoo (i do love it actually.).

after installingthis update, after having an uptime of about 10 days, 10 minutes after rebooting to coplete th install, using safari, th screen turned greay and i had to reboot. Complete system crash. Apple is starting to get lazy.

After installing 10.2.5, I'm seeing a little better than a 10% increase
in frame rate on our benchmark system, a dual 500. Very nice work,
thanks Apple. As for the rest, we've been installing the update on all
of our systems and have not seen any crashes or any other problems.
This is on a variety of Macs, from Rev A iBooks, new iBooks, a yum-era
iMac, a DV SE iMac, a Flower Power(!), a Cube, and some PowerMacs.
Makes me wonder what people are doing to their systems to make things
get gummed up like they are reporting. For the most part, unlike PCs, Macs
are all pretty much the same hardware. I suspect it's when people use
those little haxie-type things that s**** with undocumented settings and
system files. Some of those hacks are kind of interesting, but I don't think
they're worth the troubles they cause. Then again, some people just like to
b*tch. Every time I have to to work on Windows, the more I appreciate what
a great job Apple does supporting OS X.

A final note on that 10% speed improvement I'm seeing in OpenGL,
this isn't one of those cases where OS X was slower than OS 9 and they
are catching up. I've have a version of 'tranquility' for OS 9 that uses
almost the same code and this version running on 10.2.5 is the fastest
one I've seen. A 10% speed increase from a free update is outstanding.
Apple might not be perfect, but there's nothing out there that comes close.

Hey, here's an idea! Apple's mail program doesn't work the way you want it to work. Go try one of the many other email programs out there! Just because you don't think something should work a certain way doesn't make it a bug and doesn't mean Apple has to go and fix it! It could be worse. You could be running Windows where the lack of a decent email program is glaring! (And I've tried as many as I could find). And you think Mail is bad? h***, Outlook 2000 can be set up for multiple email accounts, but you can only send mail from the primary account! How bogus is that!! It makes your little signature c*** just that, c***!

So far it seems like a great update!

This is the first one since Jaguar that I really notice
a difference in performance.

I'm not going to say the dreaded word, but I agree that
a major overhaul has been done to the video (dual 867 MDD)
and it's definitely a noticable improvement!

I did have one of my monitors not recognized properly
after the initial reboot, but turning the machine fully
off and back on took care of that.

It took me less than 10 minutes to download and install. I hit install and went into the other room and when i came back it was installed and asking me to restart.

Then it took my Mac 10 minutes to restart

I am noticing that I am having trouble with Mail asking me repeatedly for some of my POP account passwords. I would enter it and then it would ask for it again and again in a endless loop.

Must be a security bug or something else... oh well. May have to switch to Entourage if it is not resolved soon.

Gotta get my mail.

I love the way Apples updating works. So far I have never had a problem. I can even work on other things while the update is taking place. So far with 10.2.5 I have had no problems except that sound still cuts out when doing certain things but this has been a problem for a while on old world computers running X.

As far as all the baby posters are MACNN I think that having users log in to post comments would help. It seems that on boards that let people post anonymously you get more garbage posts.

Since upgrading MS Word hangs on load. I have reinstalled it, but now joy. Any ideas on a fix?

check which version of word you are running, if you just re-installed it, you may need to update word, the latest version is 10.1.3 (although 10.1.2 should work just fine as well, 10.1.3 was a fix for some non-english problems.)

I upgraded from 10.2.4 to the new OS and my CD burner on an 800 mhz 17' iMac no longer burns... Thanks Apple...

After I installed 10.25 I noticed a slight but noticeable
improvement in window scrolling speed, resizing, etc.

I'm on a G4/400. It's not a GIANT change but it's
definetely noticeable.

And the OpenGL stuff was very noticeable. Thanks guys!
