A MacNN reader notes the mention of an upcoming (but unannounced) Apple Store in San Francisco: "There was a quip in the San Francisco Chronicle this morning (4/9). Mayor Willie Brown was quoted as saying "Wait until you see the plans for Apple's new store" on the site of the soon-to-move Sephora, he said 'It's sheathed in stainless steel and it's fabulous'."

    New SF store

For those who have the Chronicle, the quote is on page D10 of the Datebook section. The article is talking about the new look in Union Square and apparently the new store will be in Union Square which is very accessible by public transportation, has massive foot traffic and visited daily by large numbers of tourists and locals alike.

    not old news.

The design isn't old news, and hasn't been mentioned widely, and certainly not by Da Mayor. Don't BNASS. Not everyone spends their days memorizing bizjournals.com articles.

    Ah, perfect!

This is exactly where I thought Apple should open a new store when I first heard about Sephora leaving that location, months ago. (BTW, Sephora's moving into the recently closed McDonald's location on Powell St, near the cable car turnaround.)

This location isn't actually on Union Square, but it's ostensibly within the Union Square "shopping district." Personally I think it's better than being on Union Square itself. This spot is on the north side of Market Street, right across from Virgin Megastore. It's got good visibility from Market Street and lots of foot traffic. Across Market there's an Old Navy on one corner and a Ross on the other, and half a block south is the Marriott Hotel (the "jukebox"). Another half a block south is the Metreon, which is right on top of Moscone Center. In this location anyone going to MacWold Expo at Moscone will clearly see the store if they're coming from Market Street. If it were actually on Union Square it'd be two blocks north and less visible/accessable to Expo attendees.

BTW, just a block down Market Street there's a CompUSA. I'll bet they're not too happy about this. Their in-store Mac support has been kind of scattered, though. Their layout doesn't allow for a good placement for a full Apple store-within-a-store, so all the Apple products have been split into three widely separated main areas.

This new location is huge, too! Three floors! It's perfect to be Apple's flagship store--which it should be, since it'll get tremendous amounts of happy Apple devotees at Expo time.

I can just picture monster ad banners draping the store, unfurling down just as Jobs finishes his keynote at the Expo. (Similar to the banners on the outside of Apple's corporate headquarters in Cupertino that are visible from hwy 280.)

    Sephora is out in june...

I asked someone in the store last week when the store was closing. She was far too occupied in telling me that is was actually moving to realize I wasn't a Sephora customer...
