EarthLink today launched TotalAccess 2003 for Macintosh, a new version of EarthLink’s Internet access software: "With a movable task panel that gives quick-access to favorite functions like games, the Google search engine and Webmail, TotalAccess 2003 for Macintosh improves upon EarthLink’s previous Mac-friendly access software." Key features include one-click access to the Web, email and personal Webspace; a cleaner, faster-loading Personal Start PageSM (PSP); and a modular architecture that lets users easily download new services or content groups. The software, only available for Mac OS X, also enables subscribers to use the new Macintosh Safari browser.

I wonder if the Mac version has EarthLink's spyware in it as the Windows version. I subscribe to Yahoo's Launch streaming music/video service on my PC and I loaded TotalAccess. After the install I noticed that there was excessive "re-buffering" while playing my music for weeks long and I didn't know what the problem was. I decided to uninstall this software and everything turned out to be normal. Also, searchinga round on DSLreports there were some reported cases of TotalAccess as being a suspect as spyware.

I believe it.

Why would 'spyware' be causing your media problems? And why would it be spying on? Everyone thinks the worst of software before actually doing ANY testing to see if it is spyware. Did it ever occur to you that its just poorly written crap that does absolutely no good for the average user and above (last time I tried it, it was just a glorified launch bar) that communicates way too often with the internet (say to check you mailbox every three seconds, plus to check to see you're connected or some other thing).

Actually, for a newbie Mac OS X user, this is not a bad little application.

As I said "I believe" it caused my problems. I also said I read reports of spyware-like activity on DSLreports.com.

Think for yourself and don't try to think for me.

I've been using their DSL for two years but not their software. When I asked if there was an updated version of the dial-up software last summer for my vacation they gave me the email equivalent of a blank stare. They didn't even know what I was talking about. Every promotion they email me about is for Windows-only services. My service generally has few outages so i can't complain there but I don't use their customer service at all as a result.

My connection is working, my browsers are working. Why would I want this? I'm glad they made it, it shows some interest in OSX but honestly, I don't want to mess with something that's already working.
