    Westfield & Apple Stores

I work in the mall were the Saint Louis Apple Store is located. Westfield owns that mall (and almost every mall in my city) and would really like to see them (the mall) provide airport access through out the mall.

I work in an anchor department store, at the opposite end of where Apple Store is located, and often wished I could gain access to the Internet when on dinner breaks.

I've seen many people with laptops (Mac & PC) who would benefit from the access---even if Westfield charged...they'd make their investment back in no time..

Makers of Sendmail, the popular e-mail transmission software, were taken by surprise over the weekend by a public announcement of another flaw in the program.
Systems affected by the vulnerability include all versions of Sendmail Pro, as well as systems running open-source Sendmail versions prior to 8.12.9, including UNIX and Linux systems. A complete list of affected systems is available from CERT.

CERT said an attacker could gain control of a vulnerable Sendmail server or create a denial of service condition by exploiting the vulnerability, which was discovered by Michal Zalewski. The flaw is considered particularly dangerous since it can be exploited simply by sending a properly formatted e-mail to a vulnerable system, and CERT said the vulnerability has been successfully exploited in laboratory conditions. An e-mail message capable of exploiting the vulnerability would probably pass through a firewall undetected.

    Good for Schools!!

Its great to have an effort to get macs into schools in New Zealand. The mac following in this country seems to have waned in the last few years, so they need more programs like that. For example, I go to a university which uses macs for the language lab only. Unfortunately, that amounts to about fifteen computers out of quite a few hundred. For other work I students have to use horrid Dells (if they can actually get them going). I hear students often say things like "I love those Mac computers" when they have the chance to try the language lab machines, but still we get stck with Windoze. Luckily I can escape somewhere and use my trusty upgraded Pismo.

Anyways, I think it is a bit of a lost market for Apple. Kiwis are particularly up-to-date with technology related issues and there is no doubt more room for Apple to expand here if they even tried. Instead, a company called Rennaissance is in charge of distributing Macs and prices get inflated a lot in price (no offence to any Renaissance readers but I'd never buy a Mac in NZ anymore. I buy machines when I visit the US). What we need, as well as the educational initiative, is a few official Apple Stores or at least an official presence to cut out the middle man (Renaissance).

It has been good the last few months to see a good new NZ mac magazine. They seem to have the right idea. If some school progs. and other initiatives work things might look up here.

    Cheers.
