LaCie last week announced it began shipping its new line of desktop in capacities of up to 500GB. The drives use LaCie d2 slim, aluminum case design and feature two FireWire connectors to permit daisy-chaining additional drives without the use of a hub. The drives also include a USB 2.0/USB 1.1 connection. The drives are now available in 200GB ($470 for 2MB buffer/7200 rpm drive), 250GB ($600 for 8MB/7200rpm), 400GB ($850), and 500GB ($1100). Each drives includes a one-year warranty, three cables (USB 2.0, 6-pin FireWire-to-FireWire 800, and FireWire 800-to-FireWire 800), and LaCie Silverlining Pro for Mac OS 9 (although drive operation at 800Mbps speeds requires Mac OS X).

    Cool

    1st Post :)

Looks like LaCie is coming back after some dismal products.

The d2 line is quite nice (I have two of the 52x CDRWs). Now, to wait and see when the prices fall.

I wonder when other will have PCI- FW800 cards to drive these...

    OUCH... Pricey!

I can't image just HOW and Oxford 922 (FW 800) bridge board can be THAT much more expensive than an Oxford 911 (FW 400)?!?!?!

The drives look good, at least.

The drives look good, at least. When the price drops in line with current drives, I'll get one.

    RE: Cost

It's not just the bridge that adds to the cost over comparable, slower drives:
    - FW800 cables are more expensive, near term, and drive ships with 2 of them.

But you are right, as volume increases, prices will likely come down.

LaCie is pretty competitive with their other drive products.
