Apple is offering .Mac users (free) as part of its subscription-based Web tools offering. The collection of more than 80 online manuals and tutorials (divided into 8 categories) is valued at $30 and is designed to help users better understand Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar. ON TOPIC...

    Regarding the first post... ????????

Anyway, back on topic, Best Buy has something like this for Windows XP. They call it learning place and they charge $59 for it. It is good for EVERY user. I know a bunch about XP, but it shows you how to do it the way XP was designed to do it... Can't wait to get home and check it out with my .mac account...

    why not free?

it's weird.. you pay for the software, but you also have to pay to know how to use it better.

i'm not the usual 'get me free stuff you b******', but jaguar user could benefice a lot about this. maybe if they gave us a big user manual, but they don't.

and remember, a power user as always been the best publicity for apple over all those years. give newbie the tools to become power user and they will spread the word about that great OS.

Yeah, but no one reads user's manuals anymore.

    good for you grandmother

Hey, so what they do not give this out for free? How many people reading this forum really need this information?

Instead think of a PC owner converting or your grandmother, they do need extra information on everyday computer use. Is it wrong to charge for that type of training? No, my user group charges for it's introduction classes, the Dummies books cost money. They are making the Mac.com package actually worth something, sure it sucks to have to pay for stuff, but for new users this is a great deal.

    I agree

This is Bull. They act like they are doing tou a favor when in esssence they are making you pay for something that should be included with the computer. This is another example of Apples nickel and dime tactics. I don't have a .Mac account (and never will) and think this reeks of microft type business practices.

....my sister that is kinda new to the Mac. She can learn at her own pace and if she has a question she doesn't have to deal with my sarcasm. She it however totally willing to fork over another 100 for the next year of .Mac!

Very good point. As an non-profit, Apple and it's volunteers should provide this sort of thing for free to the world to enjoy. It only makes sense.
Oh wait, Apple is in business to make money and has to pay its employees and therefore needs to charge money for the products they produce. Of course if you've already paid Apple for it's subscription service, then this is a value added bonus. Get used to it.

    OK to charge

It's OK to charge for this kind of stuff... It's an easy for them to get more people to join .mac

Windows XP doesn't really have a manual, and good luck going to the www.microsoft.com Web site for anything...
