SoundBlaster Live! for Mac announced

Creative Labs has officially announced SoundBlaster Live! for Mac, as reader Jon Schalliol noticed. The card will be demonstrated and begin shipping at Macworld Expo next week (booth #2339). Details on the card, as well as pricing information, are not yet available. At last year's Macworld San Francisco, the company promised Mac users that it would deliver the first sound card for Macs targeted at the masses.

If it's under $150...

I'll buy it in a heart beat. If they price it at $200 or higher, it might be a hard sell. Either way, it's great that Macs will finally be able to "officially" support (and make proper use of) those high-end 5.1 speaker systems.

Can I borrow a PCI slot?

I really cant see using one of my precious PCI slots for a card just so I can listen to 5.1 channels of sound. I spent $5k on a Sony receiver and Polk Audio speakers to listen to sound with. I dont know about the rest of you but I dont have enough slots. I have second monitor card,SCSI card and I will be getting the Final Cut Pro realtime card when it comes out. Ideally I would also like to get the Pro Tools entry level card the Digi 001 card. Last but not least I would love to have the Sonnet Tempo RAID card. $150 for a sound card? Not a chance!

It does so much more...

... than just 5.1 sound. It should also improve the performance of any application that uses audio (audio software, games, MP3 players) since it frees up the processor from having to process the audio. I heard games could see a boost as much as 25%. If you don't do anything with audio, then there's no reason to get it, obviously.

I'm buying it

I have an SB Live! Drive for my PC and it's excellent. The Mac's audio output has always been lame so this is a welcome addition to my G4. We can FINALLY get 5.1 output!

Better wait...

I hope that they do a better job with the software than they did with the WebCamGo+

Doesn't look like the software will ever get out of beta. They originally advertised the camera as Mac compatible, but didn't have software available until months after it was released and many user had purchased units. The software still is only 50% functional in beta form. I guess Mac compatible to them meant it has a USB port...

Want to, but can't!

I'd buy this card in a heartbeat.. but once again it shows that 3 slots just don't cut it. I'm full, so there's no SoundBlaster in my future (at least until my Mac wears completely out and I get get a nice 7 slot machine from Dell).

Depends...

I'll wait and see how it's priced. The only way I'll spend more than $100 on the sound card would be if it had features like line-level inputs, a fairly high power output, etc. If it's just an add on to get more sound channels, I don't think it's worth the PCI slot. In all fairness, however, it is nice to see Soundblaster come out with Mac-oriented products.

lets wait and see just how bad the drivers are...
There will obviously an extension and control panel that will require more ram and if not well written to conform with the non carbon OS' could be a huge issue. Creative is exactly known for their mac products.

Tech support?

I have a Soundblaster Live Platinum 5.1 in my PC. It is an excellent product but, like most manufacturers, they try to direct you to their website for tech support which has mainly promotional material and the result is bad tech support by phone. It was difficult even finding their phone number.

Lame audio on G4s?

Have you played any DVD movies on your G4? Have you played ANY QuickTime trailers under OS X?

When you do, you will see what a waste this card is for new Macs.

I suggest you download and play the Rquiem trailer from Apple�s site, and play it under OS X, for a CLUE.

Audio on Macs with PCI

So you're saying that this will actually degrad audio quality on DVDs and playing Quicktime movies in Mac OS X client? How do you know? I would think it would actually only improve quality, concerning the G4(s) don't have to worry about working on sound. It would let you play games better and faster.

What No Optical?

From the PR photo, it doen't appear to have optical digital output. I think I'll wait till the next revision of the card. What's up with that? Almost all audio mini-systems have an optical out. This card doesn't even appear to have analog out.

Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 support. Figure out what that means and get back to me. Quicktime trailers? PAH! Try playing a DVD in 5.1 on your G4. You can't!

Soundblaster on Mac

The Soundblaster card is not necessarily geared toward the elitist high end audiophile. I'd say it's geared toward the above average user and gamers. The way the SB will work on Classic Mac OS is that the Sound Manager will still require the CPU to create the sound (unless Apple customizes the Sound Manager), but it will then be sent to the SB card to enhance the audio of all apps. But if an app is written to take advantage of OpenAL, then the sound creation and ehancements will all be handled by SB card, so the CPU is free to do other things.
This is a few discussions going on at the Mac Gamer forums (and a few other forums). A Creative Labs marketing guy is helping out a lot. He goes by CreativeOne. His posts are very informative.

The PC card has another mini card with the digital input, right? Will this be available? Also, with our low number of PCI slots, is there another way? For me, I don't think it's worth it w/o the digital input. do they make a digital output?

Have you EVER PLAYED any? Do you OWN a G4?

I do, and I know. The toshibad DSP 1000 portable DVD player sports Digital surround sound/spatializer 2-2-1, just like every G4 does. Do you know why? Cause it rocks. Macs have Digital Audio from the box, and SB is only going to add one more option, and waste one slot.

If you want it, by all means go get it. It was made for LAME PC s, always sold at low prices, which need ALL THE HELP they can get in order to be ACCEPTABLE!

Additionally....

Digital sound now goes through FIREWIRE, as with my Sony Spressa CDRW and Toast.

DIGITAL SOUND is already here.

Evaluate the SB based on what it ADDS, not on what it DUPLICATES.

I doubt it has Spatializer technology, anyway.

The SB argument ...

reminds me of a car dealer trying to sell you undercoating in this day and age.

The only thing this card adds is 5.1 stuff. Is it worth the money for that? I say no, unless you are CREATING such sound for business, or so. Otherwsie, it is better to get a device external to the Mac for playback, which will offer far more flexibility than sticking a card in a PCI slot, as you can take it around.

Digital Surround Sound is NOT the same as Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. Surround sound has a matrixed MONO surround channel that's split between two speakers, and a matrixed center channel. Dolby Digital is SIX CHANNELS OF DISCRETE AUDIO. If you don't know what the difference is and why the SB Live! is very, VERY important to the Mac, then please go back in your corner and play your movies in 2-2-1. Ignorance is bliss.

I don't give a rat's a** about your Toshiba. The G4 does surround sound, and that's NOT the same as Dolby Digital. You just don't seem to understand that a spacializer gives an ILLUSION of spacialized audio, the SB Live! pumping out 5.1 audio gives REAL spacialized audio direct from the mix.

Let me explain this to you so that you'll understand:

Movies nowadays are encoded with 6 channels: left, center, right, rear left, rear right, and the LFE (low frequency effects) which enhances the subwoofer. The Mac cannot and does not output these channels discretely like it or any DVD player should, it only outputs in stereo. Surround is decoded from stereo. What the Mac does is it takes the 6 channels, throws away the LFE (yes, it's true), turns the rear channels into a mono channel, and then matrixes in the center. What you hear is a crappy bastardization of an a**-kicking 5.1 mix.

But you're happy with c***, so enjoy it.

I have a G4. I don't play DVDs in it beacuse I have a home theater system. Even if I didn't, I have Dolby Digital output for my PC and I'd use that instead.

I think you should get a clue about audio before saying the G4 rocks. IT DOESN'T. It's not even a G4 issue, but a Mac issue in general. No Macs allow a digital input or output signal like the SB Live! Drive on the PC. This is a serious problem for the Macs in terms of games, DVDs, and audio mixing.

I praise Creative for finally bringing the SB Live! to the Mac. I saw (heard) a demo of it at MW NY in August and it sounded great! I hope that Steve will be smart enough to bundle these things with future Macs.

I suggest that anyone with questions or concerns about this catch up on the home theater forum at http://www.hometheaterforum.com and read for yourself what the differences are between the audio formats.

Cheers to Creative Labs!

Yahooooo! Finally they see there is a need of their cards for true hardware sound synth and EAX/A3D for a Mac, I've always bought their cards for my PCs since the first Soundblaster. Creative Labs always makes high quality hardware so its one of the PC elite card makers to finally to look at Mac users.
hmmm, now I wonder if I can pull out this SB Live from my PC and stick it into my future G4..... anyone else going to try it?

Amazing!

Really interesting to hear my fellow Mac fans spout off on technical isssues that most are totally cluelesss about! Only one guy got it right.. (to the clueless dumbass). However, there is one thing I'm curious about.. you said that the LFE signals are tossed. Not matrixed in? That means that one looses everything below about 150 Hz. That REALLY takes the sould out of any form of audio.. especially movies.

A question arises about which discrete channel formats SB supports.. I'll assume Dolby Digital and DTS, but what about SDDS?

I told you to play a trailer in OS X, and THEN you tell me about sound.

Now, I did not say that 5.1 is not good nor that it is not better. I said if you plan to CREATE such output, it�s good to have. But, WHY would you need to have THAT kind of sound for playback on your Mac or PC, if you have home theater? Assuming you want it for games, do you know any that offer such sound?

So, WHY?

I know the details that you posted, and I am glad that you offered them for others to read, but the LFE is NOT lost on the Mac. Losing frequencies below 150Hz would make for NO BASS at all, in essence, and everyone with ears and an equalizer knows that isn�t so.

The reaction is not to the card itself, but to the notion that Mac sound sucks or is not good, which is ANYTHING BUT TRUE!

All we are doing here is offering perspective.

If I need to create a HOME THEATER with the CENTERPIECE being my Mac, I will buy that card. If I need to CREATE 5.1 sound, I will buy that card. If there are games that OFFER such sound, and I WOULd like to play them under such circumstances, I would.

Beyond that, I am saying it is perhpas an expensive toy for most Mac users.

If you don't want a Mac PPC platform, buy a Sun, or an Anthlon, or an SGI, or an IBM RS6000 or an HP, or a crappy Gateway/Dell clone, which BTW, are just slapped together machines, by idiots, making minimum wage. Yes, the LFE is tossed

There's a serious misconception about the LFE. The LFE is not SUPPOSED to be all the bass. It's supposed to be an enhancement TO the bass. Each discrete channel is supposed to run from 20-20k Hz. That means that there's really no NEED for an LFE. Some people question why we even have it at all.

Anyway, yes, the LFE is tossed when downconverting 5.1 to Surround. Sorry, but that's the way it is. Look on the Home Theater forum and the Dolby web site for confirmation in this.

Who cares about trailers under OS X? That's c*** compared to running a trailer in Dolby Digital 5.1 on a PC using an SB Live! I've run trailers under OS X. Yawn. BORING! Surround Sound is so 1990. The audio blows compared to what you CAN and SHOULD get. You're so happy in your Surround Sound world that you have absolutely no idea what you're missing. None. Why is 5.1 so important outside creating 5.1 audio on the Mac? If I have to tell you, again, then you've really missed the whole point about why the SB Live! is so damn important to the Mac.

YES, DVD will ROCK on OS

The surround sound that comes out of OS X/Quitcktime is superior to what you get under OS 9 and DVD player 2.2.1.

The reason I mentioned Requiem to try it with is because it has been created that way and provides the sound one should look for.

Apple is offering a GREAT solution for MOST users, at a good price. It also offers DIGITAL Sound for most uses, and if you need more than THAT, pay the money.

Most people under most conditions, DO NOT NEED THAT CARD!

There are benefits...

wow... I don't know what's worse... people who are unclear on the concepts or people with attitude who are unclear on the concepts LOL

Look, this card isn't for everyone. But it does offer some great things:

1) 5.1 output. The Mac and its apps support Pro-Logic out of the box, but not 5.1. Movies can play, and sound good with Pro-Logic, but if you have the system, 5.1 is vastly superior.

2) Optical digital out. Sure you can get digital audio out of USB or FireWire, but the quality isn't as good because of cpu overhead and shared bandwidth. A true optical digital out is actually the reason I'll probably get this card, so I can make digital audio recordings to MiniDisc (yes, there are optical coverters out there right now, but the quality isn't comparable to a true optical out).

3) Decreased CPU load for audio. For a lot of games, having a separate sound card allows audio to be handled by the card so that the main CPU can concentrate on other things, so you should see an increase in game performance.

Your message DISTILLS what I have been saying:

a. Mac sound is VERY GOOD AS IS. Could be at 5.1 IF you need to/want to, although I still haven�t heard a single person say they use their COMPUTER for home theater!

b. Optical, yes, but it is an argument like the one we used to hear in the days of needles, turntables, and Class A poweramps. A PURIST thing, but only for professional or HIGH END RECORDING purposes during which the signal is not compromised during the whole process by ANY other intermediate process. Otherwise it is USELESS to go that way, cause your signal is already CORRUPTED. Something like recording on my Nakamichi deck not from a DIRECT to DISK record, but from a vinyl piece of c*** that cost $.99 at the thrift store.

c. Games. The only practical solution for STILL a subset of the Mac user base: Those like me who do play demanding games. I�d personally prefer to spend the money towards getting a 600Mhz G4 chip to replace the 400 next summer, which will give me way more fps than the sound off the CPU will, especially since I turn the music OFF, and let the sound be low enough so I can get oriented, and nothing more.

As I mentioned earlier, it is a welcome addition for the Mac market at the consumer level, but it�s not like Macs out of the box have LAME sound quality capabilites as some suggest and/or try to perpetuate, for whatever ends they have in mind.

A rounded perspective is much better than .....the baloney this thread started out with.

3D Positional Audio

Have you ever played a game with real-time 3D positional audio?

First time I heard a Sound Blaster Live, I was hooked. We're talking about being able to hear effects moving around you in REAL TIME.

It's wonderful, and I think that gamers will drool over it. For everyone else, well, they probably won't want it. I'll take the reduced load on my CPU and the 3D audio. You don't need it, that's fine.

I just think it's really great that more and more companies are flocking to the Macintosh platform with support for their products.

5.1??

I see posted on another news site that the SB Live card will NOT do Dolby Digital. And by that, let's be clear.. Dolby Digital IS 6 discrete channel audio. So it seems that it only really supports Pro Logic.. where the rear channels are synthesized.

Is this really true? If so, then the card really is aimed almost purely at gamers.. and musicians who do lots of MIDI stuff.

Here are the facts...READ

It doesn't have 5.1, but that's not important. Consider the following:

1.) The damn thing is only around $100. SO WHAT if you take up a slot with it? It's better than leaving the slot unused.

2.) It has SoundFont capabilities. This means you get a true, digital MIDI sampler inside your computer for the first time ever under $600.

3.) Games will KICK a**. Anyone thinking two speaker, "pseudo" 3D sound from OS X (or any other OS for that matter) is as good as 4 speakers and a sub COMPLETELY surrounding you is on crack.

4.) EAX makes games rock. If you've ever heard an EAX enabled game through a digital 4.1 speaker system, you know what I mean. This card has a DSP chip from E-MU (remember the old AV systems?) that makes sounds echo in games depending on the size of the room. NO 600MHz G4 is going to do that without killing your FPS. PREIOD! This thing has pro-quality reverb that won't kill CPU cycles. That's great stuff.

5.) High speed MIDI interface. Ever used MIDI over USB? It isn't pretty. Try finding a high speed, low-latency MIDI interface for your Mac that doesn't rely on the timing un-friendly USB standard. This thing costs around what a MIDI interface would cost you, and it'll work better in addition to all the other stuff it does.

6.) Digital speaker output. You can connect a 4.1 surround system to this and your USB port won't choke one peep. Try that on a G4 Cube.

7.) Seperate MIC/Line inputs. Apple gives you one, this gives you two.

Learn something about these things before you spout off about how cool, non-DSP capable, 2 speaker audio is under OS X. I'd suggest you try L-I-S-T-E-N-I-N-G to your friend's SB Live! under Windows. This is Great news that should be embraced, not criticized. you don't like it? DONT BUY ONE. But for God's sake don't kill the messenger because you aren't interested in the message. At least they DID something for under $500 (which is more than Digidesign can say).

Speakers!

Now I can hook up Klipsch ProMedia 4.1 speakers to my Mac! Woohoo!!!!! Those speakers are THX certified and they rock on my Athlon PC - I've been waiting to get hook them onto a Macintosh for what seems like for-freakin'-ever! Multi-channel sound is where it's at, especially in games. I say again - WOOOHOOOO!!!!!

Apple hasn't provided any PCI card vendors with enough information to write OSX drivers for PCI cards yet. I'd imagine if the card sells well and Apple finally makes that kind of access available that we'll see something good from it.

Well, it looks worse and worse now.

OS X WIL DO what OS 9 does, when released, so that�s not a problem. I got great sound from the Soundsticks under OS 9.0.4. So, we�re talking buying a card that does what my G4 does: Pro Logic sound. Baloney.

As for the midi, I don�t care for that.

Games is another story, but let�s find out of this thing will work AT ALL with games, or the frame rate will 0.

SBLive Digital OUTPUT

To let you know: Digital Output of the SBLive on PC is locked to 48 KHz whatever you select in your application (cubase, SFoundry...)
So, in a pro environement, SBLive is no way. I use since 6 months a MOTU 2408 MKII audio card in my G4 MP wich is very impressive.

What about the 2 slots?

I understand everything here. I really do. I know what it will and will not do. But I also know that any kind of digital I/O or even RCA I/O is on a separate card that plugs into the 22-pin header on the rear of the card. While this card doens't plug into a PCI slot, it requires a PCI rear port to mount to. So in effect, it eats up 2 PCI slots to achieve anything more than mulit-port 1/8" audio I/O. Especially for that reason, I am not buying it.

I'm a home-based musician. Believe me, digital I/O is a VERY handy feature to keep the quality up. There are plenty of other cards that will do this. However, having another company putting these cards out is a welcome thing.

Don't trust creative

Creative conned many Mac users into buying WebCam Gos
even when there was no driver that allowed it to work as a
webcam or conferencing device with a Mac - all you could do
with it was plug it in and see yourself waving! This went on for months! There's now a crappy driver that kinda works, sometimes, with some conferencing software, but very badly. Creative couldn't be more crappy when it comes to making drivers for the mac.

I can't imagine spending $100 and a PCI slot (plus maybe another $100 or even more on the extra speakers) to add 5.1 to my computer. Unless you're a hardcore gamer, or have a perverse desire to watch a lot of DVDs on your computer monitor, I don't see why you'd bother. I mean, I'm sure it's a cool and impressive feature, but not $200 cool.

Well 5.1 is not ..here

The thing doesn�t do 5.1 as someone said earlier(VERY IMPORTANT DETAIL), and I don�t know many who would connect 4 speakers to a computer.

SOUNDSTICKS.

Mac OpenAL is Carbonized

Hey folks!

About driver support, there are a few of us in the mac game dev community that do not intend to LET Creative get away with anything less than a stellar product. No, we are not going to badger them to death, we are going to help. Towards that end, OpenAL (like OpenGL but for 3D audio) is ALREADY Carbonized, and we expect more great things (perhaps AltiVec?) in the future.

Creative is committed to the mac platform and has assigned some talented mac engineers to the project. I hope that in the near future you will find 3D audio to be as stunning as you have come to expect 3D graphics to be.

Why such hostility?

A company brings a sound card that does digital sampling , DSP, and true 3D surround sound to our platform for $300 cheaper than any other Mac sound card, and you have nothing but complaints? They probably should've stuck to Windoze if this is how they're greeted by us. Some people are so stupid.
