I thought Apple had a larger margin than that. Maybe because they aren't considering channels like the Apple Store and MacMall, etc.

This number is units sold, not units owned. This means that out of all the new mp3 players sold, 6.1% of them were the iPod. The number you're thinking of is 42% (or something around there) of all mp3 players in the US are iPods. That means of all the people who have mp3 players, 42% have an iPod.

apple basically stopped seeling the 5GB model MP3player, which was the hottest one but probably lower margin on it. and all the PECEE people loved that one good price too

You're slightly incorrect, I assume you're pulling this figure from Macwold back at the beginning of the year. The 47% (I think that was the number) was for Mp3 players in JAPAN, not the US.

You can make those numbers say anything you want, as long as you word it properly.

MP3 players span a huge price range from the very cheap to the high end (iPod 20g). Apple only plays in the high-end.
It would be more informative to know what the iPod's position is in sales of 'high-end' MP3 players ( hard disk >5G)

I'm sure iPod sales will pick up when Apple finally releases some updated versions. I know I've been waiting to buy the upcomming iPod for a couple months.

just because a mp3 player can hold 5 gig or more does NOT make it a high end player... Its like saying any vehicle that can carry 1000 pounds or greater is a pickup truck...
