Sony denies Apple takeover bid

Sony has denied that it has any plans to pursue a takeover of Apple after rumor of a possible deal emerged early Friday morning. "There is no such fact," said Sony CEO Nobuyuki Idei, "a similar rumour comes up every two or three years."

Wouldn't be a bad match

Sony's products are very stylish, refinded, and well-engineered, just like Apple's. I bet Sony could do a number for Apple's publicity and exposure... and maybe lend Apple a hand or two at building sweet, magnesium/ti PowerBook casing instead of the cheap plastics they use!!

Dude, do you even understand what you are saying? The playstation 2's viedo chips are for running on televisions, which are always 640x480. Do you want everything on your computer to run at that? I didn't think so.

sony???

jobs always said that he wanted apple to be the sony of the computer world (this was before sony made consumer-level PCs and was the king of electronic media). don't buy the rumor though, somebody is always buying apple every year. i'm just a little surprised that this year sony is the favorite of the rumor mill.

matter of time

it's sony's turn. they'd feel bad if they were left out of the mill for too long. even if sony did buy apple, i doubt they'd kill off apple's designs. sony already has vaio, they don't need apple to make more of the same thing. we would be, let's say, unlikely to see a ps2 on an video card, though rumors have circled about a dreamcast pci card. there's certainly room for idle speculation, but not when you're looking to buy a new computer.

Technically television has no set resolution, it is an analog media. But 640x480 is accepted as a close match.

Sony cameras

All the digital cameras and video cameras that I use have had excellent Mac support... and their new photo printer is also Mac compatible (and pretty slick, if I might add).

Why not?

A partnership between Apple & Sony would be awesome... Imagine both leaders of computer design and audio/video equipement joining forces - that would probably bring incredible multimedia features to Macs. Sure they make PCs, but who cares? If they invest in Apple, I bet they would like it to succeed don't you think?

do and don'ts

is this 1995 again? or was it 94? Back when Sun was a lock to buy Apple Sony was another company that was so called right in line to take them over... There are a few reason that it won't happen. to take over Apple you must control 50 plus % of the stock. That's alot of Yen for a company with issues of its own (Sony that is)...

What would make sense would be an alliance between the two companies where they work on certin products together and pull resources in regard to inventory...

Or perhaps a licence to Sony to market the Mac OS in parts of the world where Apple has no roots and Sony in the standard in electronics..

To think that Apple wcoulkd be taken in a hostile take over is absurd at this point... But if the stock drops another 100 plus % it could happen but those would very dark days for Apple in the first place...

NTSC 320x240???

DOH!! What are you on? NTSC is at 640x480, has been and always will be. And By the way PS2 could easily be configured to deliver much, much hgher resolutions

NTSC

is 525 interlaced lines per frame. You only get about 475 lines of picture, the rest if field blanking - for old fashioned flyback. Most TVs are overscanned so even fewer lines get displayed.

Yep NTSC is analog.
Yep about 475 lines are displayed.
Oh, and it's interlaced.

320x240 is a very good number for the equivalent digital image quality. 640x480 on NTSC is a dream. Now if you look at the video components you can do a bit better. (e.g., NTSC and S-Video are not the same thing).

Sony & Apple Monitors

Apple already has been using Sony's Trinitron technology and multisync technology for their displays for a long time. Lest we forget it was Sony's miniturization (sp?) design that helped Apple build the Powerbook. Sony invented the 3.5" floppy, which Apple then adopted for its Macs until the iMac. Sony has been with Apple for a long time.

Minidisk players

Lots of people are using the minidisc players with the PC interface on their Macs. They just don't provide the software.

However, you have a point, their Aibo dog and many of their products do not have "official" Mac support. But I wouldn't call them the most anti-Mac company out there. There's too many others out there that could take that crown.

Why would this be bad?

To get back on topic: why would this be a bad thing. If Sony bought Apple they would bring a level of consumer-level marketing that puts Apple to shame. It would also be a great match for consumer video, whatever the current compatabilty (let's see, Sony was the first major company to adopt Firewire, built the Powerbook 100...)

Apple has once again dug a big hole for itself. Stale product lines on a chip that is in trouble. I think that we should welcome anything that would have the potential for increasing Apple's market share beyond it's current pathetic and shrinking %. What we should not do is kid ourselves that Apple is in good shape right now.

If Sony is anti-Apple, then what can you say about Oracle?

There are exactly 0 shipping products for the Mac, yet Larry claims Steve is his best friend, and sits on the board.

Oracle has killed:

Oracle Media Objects,
Oracle Power Objects,
Personal Oracle 7.

There are no versions of Developer, Discover, or Personal Oracle available for the Mac.

Ellison should either start producing real products for the Mac that people can buy and use, or get off the board.

Your dead wrong man, Oracle now has a mac client.... and are developing the dev software for the mac... that was a press release back in october of the past year... the problem is not Oracle, its that no IT group in any large compnay wants dev software on a Mac... only in recent years with the web exploding has thee even been a demand...

I mean any company is so called anti apple if they don't see a clear business model where they can make money otherwise in a capitalist system what would be the point? to make people happy??? its about the quaterly reports and makin the nimrods on wall stret happy....

Sony+Apple Good, and BAD

The good: More marketing, digital cameras, memory stick.

The BAD: Whould Apple become a non-us company? Would Apple move out of the US? Would jobs be lost? I don't even want to think about how much money would have been wated on branding the Apple logo, though, Sony could keep it on prev. Apple products. Would Sony stop making VAIOS? If not, would apple have to make PC-compatible AppleWorks (or SonyWorks), etc.? Would Sony start an ISP?

The Good/Bad, depending on your opinion: OSX for AMD/Intel chips?

The list goes on, and on, and on...

NTSC

I work in a post production house. We make commercials for television.
NTSC comes in several formats.
D1 is 720x486(expensive pro tape format)
DV is 720x480(inexpensive consumer tape format)
NTSC is not
320x240 or 640x480 these are just approximations used by cheaper video cards

NTSC

Hey, you forgot to mention the non-square (.9 ratio) D1 pixels. Multiplying 720 by .9 = 648
648x486 (or 640x480 for that matter) gives you the 4:3 aspect ratio that displays on NTSC TVs. Or something along those lines...

What if...

Micro$oft bought Apple...And then simply dissolved the company. No more annoying macs to steal thunder from M$, and the only viable platform for consumers would be some variant of windows. It wouldn't be a monopoly, since each version of windows would compete with the other versions. .

Moto would have no where to put its G4 chips...awwww, how sad... :(

Whatever it takes

If a merger means that Apple will be around for a very long time then so be it. I am no fan of Sony but if Apple is ever on the verge of going under then let it be Sony. On the other hand, if Microsoft ever, ever takes over Apple then it will truly be a sad day and I will no longer own a Mac and will just do without a computer.

While the PS2 Resolutions are 640x480. Sony does have working prototypes of Graphic Workstations that achieve higher resolution with Real Time Rendering. Note: My ATI 128 that is inside of my G3 can't achieve the same quality at 640x480.

Sony is not anti-Apple. Every top level exec received a Tenth Anniversary Mac and alot of their internal designers still use Macs. Producers for various Sony owned TV shows use Macs!

Maybe because their Vaio PC don't make them any money. Their laptop division is what keeps the Vaio line alive. Another reason to own Apple is the ability to own the platform as suppose to repackaging Windows in a box.

Don't you get a little sick of these guys who bleed Apple such that if Microsoft, or Sony, or whom ever, were to take over Apple, they would just stop using computers. Hey, I love my Apple too, but it's actually a computer, not a flag, not a country, not a religion, and those who would do without a computer if they couldn't have a genuine Apple don't need one anyway. Donate it to a kid who does, who wants to compute, and could care less who makes the computer, only that it works on all of their computing needs. Apple will be around in one form or another for a long time to come, but if you really would give up computing if you couldn't get your genuine Apple, give it up to someone who "needs" a computer and then work on getting a life.

Sony, no baloney!

With Apple's product quality ratings and service ratings falling to all time lows ( new G4 logic boards and power switches, iMac video boards, Cube blemishes etc.) maybe another company with better quality standards would be a worthy partner for Apple.
While I own several new Macs, and I love the design factors, I want reliability as well. I have been spared much of the malaise considering my "fleet", but I know others who have been far less fortunate.

Admittedly some people have stronger feelings (a lot stonger) than others, but this is the appropriate forum for their expression. They are wrong. I have a Sony CyberShot which uses MemoryStick and USB, the camera came with Mac USB Drivers and the camera mounts on the desktop as a drive. I also have the External USB MemoryStick Reader and the Sony MP3 Player that uses MemorySticks to store music. The sticks mount on my desktop and I copy mp3 on and off the sticks and copy jpegs from the stick in my camera into PhotoShop.

ok why you all doggin sony? they make some quality stuff. for consumer electronics sony is my brand of choice. ive got tons of sony stuff and have been nothing but pleased with sony. even sonys computers are not bad for PCs (for intel compatible hardware that is) i mean apple doesnt make anything as thin as those laptops they got and even though i have a 500 mhz 6 pound mac laptop i am still very close to getting one of sonys just over 2 pound laptops and putting freebsd on it so that i can have that neat tiny thing. i'm just saying of all of the companies that we all have heard buyout rumors about they all make me uneasy because i would prefer apple to remain under the command of stevie wonder but of them all if it were to happen that sony bought them then i would still envision some sort of bright future for the platform as opposed to how i would envision it happening under the control of most of the other companies that have had rumors like this.

Sony Betamax

If Sony acquired Apple.... the Mac would go the way of the Betamax. It too was better than the competition, but Sony pricing kept it from competing with the inferior but cheeper and widely accepted VHS system. Hum... notice the similar
slippery path the Mac would descind!

The original PowerBook

I might have this completely wrong, but i have always learned that when Apple Computer came up with the PowerBook 100 series (PB 100, 140 & 170), that the actual insides were put together by Sony. Sony miniaturized IIcx's and IIci's for Apple so that they would fit the origianl PowerBooks.
This, of course, was a mjor improvement on their first Macintosh "Portable".

640x480?

Uh, I, ME, beg to differ, but...

Standard NTSC is generally measued in Horizontal (and vertical) lines of resolution... however digital is usually 720x480/486 rectnangular pixels whereas analog signals are 640x480 square pixels, generally speaking- however many cameras/devices vary in their output of both pixels and lines of resolution (760x572, etc). Standard NTSC however is NOT 320x240 pixels, it is 525-lines interlaced video

both are wrong, NTSC isnt at an equal aspect ratio to computer monitors. NTSC supports i believe 640 x 420 or some other odd 600-400 config. I dont understand why we dont have HDTV standard yet, seeing as how they were standard in japan in like 1988. Anyhow PS2 sucks monkey testicles, polygon performance doesnt mean a thing when you can never achieve peak rates in a game, and the controller is c*** too, i about broke my wrists holding one. Ugh... not a videogame forum... ill shut up now.
