updated 12:28 am EST, Fri January 5, 2001

4D will showcase at Macworld Expo WebSTAR Server Suite V for Mac OS X, which it says is "currently 50% faster than the built-in web server; however there are still a couple of major optimizations that we have not been done yet which will widen the gap considerably." A developer release is due at th show or soon after, according to the FAQ sheet outlining the future plans for the WebSTAR on Mac OS X.

    hhhmmmm

Support for multi processors will be very very nice. Something OS X Server does not do. Now we just need Blueworld to port Lasso to OS X and it's goodbye OS 9 on my server.

    Faster?

What exactly do they mean by "faster?"

In the past Webstar has often announced their new versions to be "faster" (ex.- the Altivec-enhanced version) when in fact they did not deliver web pages any faster. A server is only as fast as it's slowest link (I/O in the past). I find it hard to believe that Webstar will actually deliver web pages faster than Apache.

Also, does anyone know if Webstar is going to adopt the htaccess file convention over their current single admin file? That would make it a lot easier to port unix scripts ...

    Faster

I guess by faster that is it will process complex server based commands faster than before. I agree that this is usually not much of an issue, however it talks about the that in the FAQ with SSI's and CGI's performing better because they are CPU reliant. I would imagine that if you run Webstar and FMPro on the one box that it would also be alot faster as multible application calls on the one box really slow it down. Of course it is still as fast as what most content can be delivered top the end user anyway.

    Apache, PHP and MySQL

This combo is amazing ... and ... FREE. I tried lasso, but why when you have PHP for FREE.

Having never coded a line of PHP (never really coded much of anything), within a week I set up a single php page which searches an address book database by zipcode. It automatically truncates the zip to three digits, searches the database (a few thousand records in the flash of an eye), returns the results in sets of 10 with previous and forward buttons on each page. If there are no records, it returns a page saying so and asks you to search by state. If there are records it displays them, if not it says sorry and lets you try another zipcode. This is all done in ONE php page.

I was able to do this so fast because there are literally thousands of php scripts out there for free, just waiting to be downloaded and modified for your use. When is the last time you found a repository of lasso scripts on the web?

    Just idle curiousity...

Just idle curiousity, why wouldn't 4D make their MacOS X software compatible with Apache from the get-go? That would seemto make the most sense considering Apache is the built-in (not to mention industrial strength) web server.
