Web browser notes: Camino, Safari

Several readers point to recently posted notes on Mac browsers, including notes by Mitchell Baker of Mozilla.org on browser innovation and Safari developer Dave Hyatt's thoughts on tabbed browsing:

[] "We would have preferred to have Apple use Gecko or collaborate with us on the development of the Camino browser, but providing an alternative to an OS-sponsored browser is nothing new to us. The key goal of the Mozilla project is to help keep content on the web open and help keep access to that content from being controlled by a single source. Apple's decision to ship a browser based on an open source rendering engine, with a focus on standards compliance, is a good thing for the big picture goal."

[Dave Hyatt] "I've seen a lot of comments in various Mac forums where people have claimed that 'Dave Hyatt said he doesn't like tabbed browsing!' or 'Dave Hyatt hates tabbed browsing!' I find these posts perplexing, because I never said any such thing, and of course the opposite is true. I love tabbed browsing. I implemented tabbrowser in the Mozilla trunk. I implemented tabbed browsing in Chimera. I implemented the version used in Phoenix. Given how many times I've implemented it, I'm amazed that people would think that I am not a tabbed browsing devotee."

Who on earth would have thought that Dave Hyatt doesn't like tab browsing?

    As soon as Safari gets...

tabs I'll never use Mozilla again on the Mac. As soon as Safari works for my bank web page I'll never use IE again. Then again, I might just as well change banks.

    I do not

I do not like green eggs and ham, I do not like green eggs and ham. Given that I don't like green eggs and ham I'm amazed that people would think that I like green eggs and ham.

    Real news worthy stuff here.

    tabs WILL appear folks

I think it's interesting that people are freaking out about Safari not having a tabbed interface. Tabbed browsing most probably *will* eventually make it into the Safari codebase. It has already been implemented in the khtml source tree and Konqueror as of version 3.1. Apple took their snapshot from KDE version 3.0.2 for Safari so, it was not yet implemented. Once the Safari changes are merged back into the khtml source tree, undoubtedly Apple will begin working with a fresh snapshot of khtml - which will include tabbed browsing. That is, of course, unless Apple's Safari team develops tabbed browsing on their own. OR - if Jobs kills it for some stupid reason.

    Safari and tabs

I'm using Safari beta v.64 right now, which has tabbed browsing, although it needs to be enabled via an app like Safari Enhancer. It's not on by default. I like the implementation in this build, but I hope Apple adds a preference to have external apps open a tab instead of a new window. I find that to be one of the most annoying things about Safari as it exists right now. Use any app that calls up a URL, and Safari will just make a new window. If you use something like that alot (I use MacReporter for example) you end up with tons of open windows on your screen! Highly annoying!

No, it's about eggs, not newsworthy, which is tabs, etc.
