    stealing thunder?

Perhaps this might be a way to steal thunder from Apple's MacWorld Expo announcements next week? Numerous rumors and facts have lined up (dvd/cd-r drives being a hot topic, Apple's past purchase of two dvd software packages, Apple's forthcoming "exciting as iMovie" product, etc) to make one wonder what will exactly be announced next week. Could it be something like this? I know it would please me greatly if it were true. [holding breath now...]

    Missed opportunity

Apple could have worked with developers and gotten a CD/DVD RW drive out a full year ago. Now they are only riding the tide. It's gonna take more than this to make Apple profitable again.

    dvd-r

last time i check you could buy 5-6 imacs for the price of a cheap dvd-r that makes true dvds. I mean in november of 1999 Disign Graphics magazine ( issue 52 ) did a review of pioneers (brand new then- s201) external scsi-2 dvdr - and it was listed @ $9,000.

Don't get me wrong i would love to have the option for dvdr, but i don't see how macs are going to be affordable if dvdr is standard. Even if the prices are 1/10th, that's still a bit of a price hike .

oh, and another point i guess you should know just in case apple can pull something like this off -

the dvdr that was reviewed was a 1x speed. and It burned 1 full dvd (4.7gigs) in 7h 49m 21s.
