An upgrade at Newton North High School may provide teachers with nearly $750,000 in computer hardware, software, and training, including as part of a 3-phase $6.3 million project (hardware, software, and support), according to the Daily Herald.

"The laptops will be phased in over the next three years. This fall, District 54 will provide laptops to about 1,700 students in seven of its 22 elementary schools. Another seven or eight elementary schools will receive laptops for their fourth-, fifth- and sixth graders beginning in the 2004-2005 school year. The remaining elementary schools will receive laptops for students in these grades beginning in the 2005-2006 school year. When the program is at its peak, about 5,100 students and dozens of staff members will work daily on laptops."

    In schools ROCK!

Pasing out laptops, sure! Sign Me Up!!

    That is to cool.

Windows and there machines are just bad quality pieces of unreliable garbage.

A pre G3 powermac 9500 would be more enjoyable than any latest MS OS machine.

PC users: SWITCH! You're all missing out!!

Just for a f****** laptop? How about a decent education. How about moving out of the hellhole that is Schaumburg.

    this is cool...

Glad to see that they are starting to do things like this in Illinois... Now all they need to do is get them in the downstate cities like Bloomington/Normal, where there are two universities, and of course State Farm Headquarters. This would be a great market... The education department here is rated as one of the best in the country.

    Not in B/N...

Unit 5 and District 87 won't be adopting a laptop for students program anytime soon.
A: Unit 5 just built a new HS and addition to Normal West. (because they REALLY "needed" a pool
B: Both are facing budget problems right now
C: Unit 5 is PC (AFAIK) 87 might not but i doubt it. Neither district is going to suddenly switch platforms...

I'd love to see it, but it ain't gonna happen....

    good resource allocation!

man, what do a bunch of 5th graders need brand new ibooks for. thats rediculous. having computers available for them to use is one thing but passing them out like candy is asking for trouble.
