Apple Developer Connection has posted the among the six major browsers for the Mac (Safari, Mozilla, Internet Explorer, iCab, Opera, and Omniweb). The tests conclude that Mozilla has the best overall script handling with its XML import features (except for one bug), while Safari comes in second (and OmniWeb in last place).

    WOW!

So does that mean that Chimera would do as well as Mozilla, or not necessarily?

    Re: WOW!

Eventually, yes, Chimera will do as well as Mozilla all aspects of rendering. Currently, Chimera is based on an older version of Mozilla's layout engine because developers wanted to focus on bringing Chimera up to speed in functionality and such without the floor moving from under them. Once Chimera is more mature will they bring the layout engine up to date with the current Mozilla code.

    Don't know

Well, the rendering engine will not affect Chimera's abilities to execute most of these script tests, but I'm not sure of an answer.

    Chimera

My guess is that chimera Kicked Safari's a** and they didn't want to post is so they used Mozilla as an example instead.

    Sigh...

...Chimera IS Mozilla, as far as javascript's concerned. Just an old version of Mozilla.

    Safari and OS-X

Given that the download size of Safari is something like 1/10 that of Internet Explorer I can't help but think that a fair amount of Safari's capabilities are provided by OS-X itself. I noted that although the version of Safari used in the test was the most recently released beta, version 60, that the version of OS-X used was version 10.2.1 as opposed to the current 10.2.4. I wonder if the tests would show any difference under the current OS-X release.

    gecko

Lemme tell you, this Chimera is one h*** of a good Mac browser. While it uses the same gecko rendering engine as Moz, it's a fully native Cocoa outer wrapper. I used to be of the "real men don't need tabs" school, but once I started actually using them, I find there's no way I can go back. That plus full keychgain support and I'm sticking with Chimera. The current plan is to "re-sync" with the trunk (gecko) very soon now; the issues seeming to hang that up is, naturally, the lawyers (they have to change the name and the best candidate to please the lawyers is Camino (yeah, I know, butt-ugly doesn't do justice to a browser named Camino).

    read the article.

please read the article. there was no clear winner. Mozilla may have passed all the tests, but it said it was slow. All the browsers had pros and cons.

    Lawyers?

I serious doubt the Chimera "team" has *a* lawyer, let alone a group of lawyers tellin them what to do.

More than likely someone got a threatening email, they all pouted and then tossed back some beers to come up with "Camino" and spin this story to no end to garner some sympathy marketshare (aww look at the poor widdle browser being beat up by upstart Safari).

    Blah.

    Tests are a fraud!

I'm not even going to bother reading them, because I know they're fake! How? Easy, the story says Safari came in second! There's no way anyone releases test results about anything without they're product coming up first. For example, Apple uses some half-baked Photoshop tests to show the Mac wipes up the PC in speed. PC idiots use some other half-baked tests to show the PC wipes up the Mac. PC idiots don't come out and say "Wow, we ran our own tests and the Mac makes the PC look like a commodore 64. We're all buying Macs!" Its just not done.

Therefore, the fact that Safari came in second shows me someone wasn't testing things right...
